The House

“Many houses in our neighborhood are white. We wanted ours to stand out, except we couldn’t go too wild — it’s a Colonial, after all! Dusty blue siding makes it special but still classic," say homeowners Michael and Emily Kimberly. A row of thick corbels beneath the eaves adds flair and gives the new house old-school cred.

In the yard, Michael and Emily went for a symmetrical look to match the balanced elements of their home. They planted Steeds upright holly on the far ends of each side, along with two camellia shrubs on either side of the porch steps that get pretty pink blooms in late fall. Dainty Franklin’s Gem Korean boxwood fill the beds at the end of the walkway.

The House

“Our house wasn’t this cute when we bought it — think dingy white paint, a flat front, and bare landscaping," explain homeowners Deborah and Michael Borkowski. "Once we added new siding in gray and shutters in blue, had a portico built, and filled out the beds, it looked so friendly!”

The portico's triangular pediment is classic Colonial Revival. “We appreciate the protection from the elements when we’re hunting for the key,” says Deborah. The couple put in a pair of 7-foot-wide window boxes, one on each side, to give their place an extra shot of color. Doing them on just the first floor makes upkeep simpler. They’re filled with a voluminous mix of annuals, including bacopa and calibrachoa.

As for the pathway to the front door, Deborah and Michael didn’t change anything. Red brick and a whimsical curve — what’s not to love?

The House

“We couldn’t resist the wide porch and balcony of our Colonial Revival," say homeowners Melissa and John Pflieger. "They used to be blocked by big crape myrtles, but we switched them out for shorter greenery. Now you can see all of the wonderful details.”

As for the balcony, six ball-top newel posts make it downright regal. For the holidays, Melissa adds swags of greenery and red bows along the railing. On the roof, a set of three dormers perks up the roofline and brings plenty of light into the third-floor living space.
