These nine towns ring in the New Year in unusual ways tied to the outdoors and favorite crops.

Here It Cones
The Weatherford Hotel's Great Pinecone Drop happens on New Year's Eve in downtown Flagstaff, Ariz. It's been a tradition since New Year's Eve 1999.
Nutty New Year
An acorn designed by David Benson is the focal point among revelers at midnight attending First Night Raleigh in North Carolina. The 1,250-pound sculpture is made of copper and is 250 times bigger than an actual acorn, according to North Carolina State University.
Seeing Green
The Indiana town of Vincennes rings in the new year with a Watermelon Drop. Vincennes is in Knox County, which is known for its melon crops and produces 70 percent of watermelons in Indiana and Illinois, according to the Illiana Watermelon Association.
Peachy Keen
In the Peach State, an 800-pound peach sculpture descends from a tower at Underground Atlanta.
Put a Cherry on Top
Crowds gather in Michigan annually for the CherryT Ball Drop in downtown Traverse City. Michigan produces 70 to 75 percent of the tart cherries - from 3.8 million trees - grown in the U.S, according to Traverse City Tourism. The town also holds the National Cherry Festival each July.
Bunch of Fun
In California's Wine Country, an illuminated bunch of grapes is a nice pairing with music during the Temecula Grape Drop.
Celebrating with the 'Shroom
An 800-pound stainless steel mushroom drops on New Year's Eve in Kennett Square, Pa. The town is known as the "Mushroom Capital of the World."
In a Pickle
A quirky pickle sculpture drops at midnight in the Dillsburg, Pa., town square. The town's New Year's Eve festivities also include serving pickle soup.
Juicy Journey
Miami pays homage to the fresh citrus grown in the state with "Big Orange," which ascends the side of the InterContinental Hotel on Biscayne Bay. The neon orange reaches the top at midnight on New Year's Eve.
