Blue Kitchens Are Trending
Blue is hot in kitchen designs right now. Unlike other colors, blue can act almost like a neutral, says interior designer Christina Tello, an interior designer and owner of Tello Interiors in Portland, Oregon. Just think about the pens you write with, she says. "You don't think of blue ink as an accent color," Christina says. "It can carry a range of tone — you can go dark and deep with it, or you can go lighter and brighter."
Make It a Main Attraction or a Subtle Accent Color
Whether you're planning to renovate, redesign or simply redecorate with textiles like window treatments, a coat of paint or fresh cabinet handles and drawer pulls, you can use blue as a subtle neutral or a bold accent color.
We've pulled together dozens of ideas and consulted designers across the country to spark your imagination as you design your dream kitchen. Here, rich shades of teal on the walls and cabinet pick up on hints of color in the countertop. A simple floral display elevates the elegance.
Calming Blues Add Tranquility
This light blue and white kitchen designed by Michelle Gage, of Michelle Gage Interior Design, evokes a sense of calm with its soothing shades and pristine white gas range, a stylish departure from the stainless fridge and dishwasher. The balance of blue and stark white plays up the natural lighting and makes the space feel large and airy.
Lighter Shades of Blue Are Increasingly Popular
In this closeup of the range from the previous slide, a stark white oven with gold accents looks fantastic among powder blue cabinets. "Navy was a burning hot trend a few years ago, but now we’re really seeing pale blues make their mark," says Michelle Gage, who designed this kitchen. "This softer shade is a twist on more traditional tones."
Open Shelving Lets an Accent Wall Truly Stand Out
These hand-painted ceramic and terra-cotta tiles add a smart blue accent wall to the kitchen. Open shelving like this allows you to display neutral dishes and cookbooks without clashing with or overpowering the beautiful tile pattern. Using solid, matching blues elsewhere in the kitchen can also help pull out the color in the tiles and highlight the backsplash.
Tinted Subway Tile Makes a Great Backsplash
If you decide you want to bring blues into your kitchen, you can choose to use it as an accent color or really go all-out. In this kitchen designed by Zoë Feldman, of Zoë Feldman Design, the intention is for you to "to feel ensconced in that color," she says. "We picked a blue with a lot of gray and green in it, so we picked a tile that has a lot of variation but similar tones, too."
Use Light and Dark Colors Together for Contrast
Christina Tello says she once designed a kitchen with bold blue cabinets and a gray subway tile backsplash — much like the one in this photo. "Blue just has such a depth of presence," she says, unlike yellows, for example, which are bright but thin pigments.
Maximize Storage Space All the Way to the Ceiling
A rolling library-style ladder makes practical use of hard-to-reach spaces in this kitchen designed by Lisa Furtado. It's more than just practical, though. Its plain simplicity is a nice touch in a kitchen with other wooden accents. The lighter shade of blue — Stillwater, from Benjamin Moore— complements the lighter tone of the wood.
Achieve Balance With a Two-Toned Kitchen
This two-toned kitchen, designed by Gabriela Laboy, lead interior designer for Martha O'Hara Interiors in Minneapolis, balances bold navy and stark white cabinets. Gabriela says she designed this kitchen four years ago, but the style remains fresh — and people continue to ask for it. In spite of the contrast, the blue acts like a neutral here, Gabriela says.
Create a Custom Coffee Station
"For someone who wants to make a bold statement without thinking you're going wild, darker blue gives you that statement," Gabriela Laboy says. This is no ordinary pantry cabinet — these doors, which slide back into the cubby when opened, hide a coffee station reminiscent of a high-end hotel room. Gabriela says this unique kitchen was previously an enclosed space, and she turned it into an open concept. The main blue wall you saw in the previous photo divides and becomes a hallway when the doors are opened.
Yellow Accents Brighten Up This White and Blue Kitchen
This gorgeous kitchen has thoughtful touches of yellow to accent its blue cabinets. Its open shelving along the back wall is a perfect example of how you can use your dishes to make colorful statements instead of hiding them inside cabinets. Textiles matter, too, and can be a smart (and inexpensive) way to add color to a kitchen without committing to construction or a pricey paint job.
Use Subtle Wooden Features in a Farmhouse-Style Kitchen
The floating wooden shelves in this beach house kitchen designed by Zoë Feldman play off the exposed beams. "This kitchen is a little more organic," Zoë says. "We wanted to have a hint of blue, but didn't want the whole room to feel blue." So, they opted for a deep blue that's not quite as stark as black, but much more neutral than a lighter shade. "We didn't want it to feel like a blue kitchen," she says. "We wanted to soften what would otherwise feel like a black kitchen."
Explore Blue Appliances — If You Dare
Some companies have started to offer refrigerators, ranges and smaller appliances in a range of retro blue colors. It's bold — and potentially risky — to go for appliances that aren't your standard, neutral fare, but in this kitchen, it works. "I love the look of colored appliances, but you need to be more mindful of your other selections in this space when making this slightly riskier move," Michelle Gage says. "I love cobalt blue ranges — or Kelly green ones. If I specified either in a space, I’d likely stick to white or light gray cabinets to balance out the range’s boldness."
Combine Navy Cabinets and Marble Countertops for a Beautiful Look
If you're concerned about getting tired of a certain color, Gabriela Laboy recommends starting with a small area, like a kitchen island. Then if you decide you want to change it, it's a much easier fix than repainting everything or ripping out tile.
Let Your Wood Floors "Sing"
If you're updating a kitchen with hardwood floors and wooden cabinets, a new paint job can go a long way. "One of the things that happens most when I get called into a kitchen renovation is that the floors are oak and the cabinets are oak, and it's oak on oak — too much oak," Christina Tello says. "You can keep your cabinets and paint them blue, and that lets the wood floor sing more."
Use Textiles to Add Easily Changeable Color
When deciding how to use color in your kitchen, Christina Tello recommends sticking to areas that can easily be painted over, replaced or updated, such as walls, textiles, tile backsplashes and cabinets, for example. In this kitchen, a red rug bridges the two tones — a rich blue accent wall of cabinets and white walls and counters elsewhere, which make the ceiling feel higher.
Use Blue to Ground a Bright, White Kitchen
The use of blue in this kitchen designed by Mary Patton, of Houston's Mary Patton Design, highlights the gleaming hardwood floors. Cane-back stools complement the floors and are both comfortable and easy to clean, Mary told HGTV earlier this year. The open shelving along the bright white back wall displays dishes meant to be seen.
Blue Hues Can Add Depth to Cabinet Textures
"There was a time you didn’t see blue kitchens and there will be a time again when you don't," Zoë Feldman says. But she's not concerned about this trend being short-lived. Blue is the "most intelligible color for everyone," she says — it's the most common favorite color. Here, a lovely shade of blue with purple undertones pairs perfectly alongside open shelving featuring brass drinkware.
Dark Blues Make This Kitchen Feel Cozy
The angled subway tile backsplash in this deep blue kitchen adds texture, making the backsplash stand out more against the solid, blue cabinets. To brighten up such a rich use of color, you can add a patterned rug, like the red one here, for a homey and cozy touch.
Focus on the Tile
This beautiful tile backsplash plays up the grout rather than trying to hide it. The white lines created by the angled tiles highlight the rich blues and bring out the subtle variations in its color. Keeping the cabinets unpainted puts the focus on the backsplash and makes the most of it as an accent wall.
Open Shelving Maximizes Natural Light
This gorgeous kitchen designed by HGTV host Tiffany Brooks makes a wall of windows functional with open shelving that doesn't completely block the natural light streaming in from behind. A butcherblock countertop on the island pairs well with the powder blue cabinets and adds a homey touch to the more retro-industrial shelving and sink hardware.
Blue Cabinets Distinguish This Kitchen From the Living Room
Some things never go out of style, like this timelessly classic light fixtures with an antique brass feel. Gabriela Laboy says brass is seriously in right now, and she also loves mixing metals. "It gives you that nice, warm feel," she says. "That's another element that's going to stay." The deep turquoise cabinets and marble-topped island help separate this transitional kitchen from the rest of the home's living space, which is painted stark white.
Lighter Blue Shades Can Highlight Gold Accents
The golden knobs on this gorgeous white range stand out as bold statements along with the door pulls on the light blue cabinets. A kitchen like this has stylistic longevity because it can be easily updated with a new coat of paint, Christina Tello says, and this white oven will work well with many different color schemes.
Make Your Accents Work Together
These green pendant lights really bring out the patterned tile backsplash, which pleasantly disrupts an otherwise white wall of cabinets and appliances. Wooden chairs stand out against the rich navy island in this open kitchen, which feels airy and spacious thanks to smart use of color.
Scandinavian Open Plan Kitchen With Blue Pendants
If your kitchen doesn't need a whole renovation but could still use some fresh new looks, consider integrating blues in textiles, light fixtures and furniture. These bright blue chairs add a lot of color to this open plan kitchen, designed by Kristina Crestin, HGTV's 2019 Designer of the Year, without needing to change anything else.
A New Backsplash Can Upgrade Your Kitchen
If you want to make your kitchen more colorful without redoing everything, adding a tile backsplash can go a long way. Christina Tello recommends using patterned tiles that aren't solid blue. She sources a lot of tile for her projects from Ann Sacks.
Neutral Blues Help Play Up Other Accents
Slate blue walls really act like a neutral in this kitchen, whose focal point is the gorgeous glass light fixture in the middle of the room. The shade adds color without detracting from the beauty of the glasswork. White cabinets brighten the room and make it feel more open and spacious.
Pair Gold and Brass Fixtures With Rich Blue Hues
It seems that all shades of blue are trending right now, but there are a few in particular that Christina Tello really loves. She recommends checking out the wildly popular Hague Blue, from upscale paint company Farrow & Ball, and Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore.
Bright Chairs Add Flair
The choices you make around your central color or colors can change the way they're perceived. When you mix blues with grays and lighter blues, Zoë Feldman says, it really makes the blues in your kitchen stand out. When you mix them with white or wood, it can make the color feel more neutral. This kitchen makes use of a lot of different shades of blue, but keeping the island and floor's natural hardwood look helps to balance it out.
Use Seat Cushions for Bright Accent Colors
Blue is used as a fairly neutral color in this kitchen. In this open, slate-blue design, the wood floors truly shine among the cabinets. Salmon-colored stool cushions add a bright and modern splash against the island without dominating the whole color scheme.
Use Color Carefully in Your Floors
This laundry area dares to add blues and greens directly into the floorboards, which can be a bold move because of how difficult it is to update a floor when your style changes. But here, it works — the light blue cabinets floor tints and striped pendant light all complement each other well and tie the room together.
Upgrade With Subway Tiles
Subway tiles excel at catching light, and can be a gleaming upgrade from a simple white paint job or wallpaper. Here, they line the whole kitchen and create a perfect backdrop for houseplants that liven up the space and break up the stacks of dishes on the open shelving.
Work Some Magic With Blue and Brass
Jenn Feldman, a 2019 HGTV Designer of the Year nominee, used statement wallpaper and drawer pulls made from glass and brass to create a super-stylish bar area here. The sink hardware matches perfectly with the brassy patterns in the wallpaper.
Understated Pendant Lights Gleam in This Blue and White Kitchen
Designer Jenn Feldman used brass faucets and light fixtures as smart accents in this bright and spacious chef's kitchen. The deep blue island complements the brass. Understated seats with white cushions complete the look.
Small Country Kitchen With Elegant Details
This kitchen designed by Hilary Farr, from HGTV's Love It or List It, has lots of unique touches that make the most of a small space. The rustic decor above the stove and tin tiles on the ceiling add retro touches that are complemented by bold blue cabinets.
Just the Right Amount of Color
Striking blue-gray cabinetry steals the show in this transitional space. The calming-yet-bold blue pairs seamlessly with the clean white walls and trendy marble countertops.
Retro Vibes
Create an inviting and full-of-life space with a bright blue and white kitchen. Sky blue cabinets bring happy personality to the space, while white tile and walls pack a crisp-and-clean punch.
Slate Blue Beadboard
Breathe new life into the kitchen with a relaxing shade of blue throughout. A serene hue of slate blue offers the beadboard cabinets a lovely base for trendy gold hardware.
Beautiful Backdrop
A huge plus to choosing a warm shade like blue, besides the versatility of the shade, is that the color allows for hardware and accents to really pop. Here, deep blue, shaker-style cabinets provide a beautiful backdrop for gorgeous gold pulls and wooden countertops to shine.
Grounded With Blue
The color blue is commonly known to symbolize many feelings associated with peace, relaxation and calmness, making it the perfect shade for a high-traffic room such as the kitchen. A rich hue of navy coats the lower cabinets in this dreamy, magazine-worthy kitchen.
Big on Color
On the hunt for a kitchen color that pairs perfectly with brass accents? Look no further than the rich and serene shade of teal blue, seen in this stunning kitchen’s cabinets and island, to create an oasis right in your own home.
A Calming Space
Make the kitchen your new favorite room with a blue-filled makeover. This contemporary space is flooded with a divine shade of periwinkle-blue, from the flat-panel cabinets to the side wall to the chic island.
