Make a Gardening Apron

Gardening Apron

Make a custom gardening apron for you or someone you know who loves to be outdoors.

Cut Out the Fabric and Ribbon

Lay the fabric out on the floor and cut out the following pieces: One 20 inch x 26 inch piece (apron body). One 4 inch x desired length piece to form an apron tie, to go all the way around your waist (mine was 46 inches long). One 20 inch x 18 inch piece (pocket body). Two 12 inch pieces of ribbon.

Fold the Apron Body

Fold the 20 inch x 26 inch piece of fabric in half with the good sides of the fabric facing out. It should become a 20 inch by 13 inch square. Pin it in place.

Sew the Edges

Sew around the three open edges of the apron body leaving approximately a one inch seam.

Shear the Edges

Trim around the sewn edges of the apron body with pinking shears. This prevents the edges from fraying. Repeat all these same steps for the apron body on the pocket body. Start by folding the pocket body into an 18 inch by 10 inch square. Once sewn and trimmed with the pinking shears, set it aside.

Make the Tie

Fold the 4 inch fabric in half with the good sides facing out. This forms a 2 inch wide-by-your desired length strip of fabric. Pin it in place. Sew the tie on all three edges leaving a 1/2 inch seam. Then trim the edges with the pinking shears.

Attach the Tie

Center the tie on the top of the apron. This is the folded edge without the shearing. Pin it in place.

Tuck in the Ribbon

While the apron tie is pinned to the apron body, place the two pieces of ribbon on top of one another and tuck them under the tie approximately 3 inches in from the side. Pin them in place. Then sew around all four sides of the apron tie that sits on the apron body.

Tie the Ribbon Ends

Knot off the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.

Attach the Pocket

Center the pocket body on the apron body below the apron tie. Pin it in place. Sew the pocket on three sides leaving the top of the pocket open. Next, equally divide the apron pocket into three pockets. Sew two evenly spaced straight lines down the large apron pocket to form a total of three pockets.

A Place For Everything

Gloves, trowel, scissors and hand pruners all have a place in these deep pockets.

Twine Holder

Push one ribbon through the ball of twine and tie it off. Now you can carry twine wherever you go!
