The Story
The reaction people typically have when they first look around Tamar and David Volosov’s house: “I don’t think I could ever do this, but it totally works!” Built in 2020, their Silver Spring, Maryland, home served as a blank canvas for Tamar’s vision. “I’m all about mixing crazy-bright colors and strong patterns in a way that feels a little fancy, not fussy,” says Tamar, who admits she might be making up for lost time. (She grew up in a mostly white house.) Razzle-dazzle to thrill her three children and guests also mattered; the couple have been known to host 30-plus friends for Friday night Shabbat dinners. Tamar gave designer Dana Schwartz the green (and blue and pink and purple) light, and no room was left unadorned. “While out-of-the-box glamour isn’t for everyone,” says Tamar, “it’s definitely for us.”
The Living Room
“Normally you’d have a neutral ceiling and a gorgeous rug — we flipped it,” says designer Dana. Teal green wallpaper by Romo is even more of a showstopper next to the dark blue walls (Downpour Blue by Benjamin Moore). The curvy Lee Industries sofa with golden legs says “luxe”; stain-treated speckled fabric from Romo says, “Kids are welcome.” Eye-popping S. Harris fabric on the chair adds another layer of glam. Those acrylic arms are standouts, too. (The chair is from Bernhardt Furniture Company.) The clear material, also in the coffee table (from Century Furniture) and curtain rods, balances the room’s vivacity — but is posh in its own right.
The Kitchen
Teal paint (Casco Bay by Benjamin Moore) is just the right amount of unpredictable for the kitchen cabinets and islands. Inserting it into the coffered ceiling panels lends cohesion and coziness to the room. When you have brass counter stools (from Crate & Barrel) and aged brass trim on the island, even pizza-making is chic. The glam theme continues in diamond-shaped Circa Lighting pendants, cabinet hardware from Top Knobs and a custom range hood.
The Breakfast Nook
Flowery wallpaper from Osborne & Little and abundant natural light are like a glorious hothouse. And that chandelier: Can you say “statement piece?" From Arteriors, “it helps make the breakfast nook my favorite place in the house,” says Tamar. The teal rattan chairs tie to the natural wood beams above and the hits of color in the wallpaper. They’re from Urban Outfitters.
The Den
Tamar and Dana designed the den around the wild wallpaper from Wallshoppe. It sets the scene for when board game pieces wind up scattered everywhere. Metallic fronds on a CB2 floor lamp have playful flair in the kids’ hangout. The furry stool (from HomeGoods) provides cute and cushy seating for playing with Lego sets. The “desk” is a 6-foot-long dining table by Gus. The happy mix of pillows are from Jonathan Adler and Aelfie.
The Main Bedroom
Sweet dreams are made of this velvet abstract fabric by Holly Hunt that covers the bed. The scalloped edge of the headboard mirrors the loops of the bead chandelier from Shades of Light. Although the hues on the Arteriors bench are muted, the design is packed with panache. Says Tamar, “I wanted the bedroom to be a little less crazy than the rest of the house so we could fall asleep.”
Keira's Room
Keira says the brassy bed frame makes her feel princess-y (it’s from RH Teen). “A canopy is a great way to draw the eye up to the 9-foot ceiling and utilize the whole space,” says Dana. The butterfly wallpaper and curtain fabric are by Christian Lacroix, and the lavender bed sheets are from The Company Store. Tamar scored the chindi rug from her grandparents’ home after they downsized. Yes, hand-me-downs can be glam! A rug is layered beneath for added coverage.
The Bathroom
“You can’t be unhappy when you’re soaking in a purple tub,” says Tamar. She got the idea after seeing a yellow one on Instagram; Dana suggested purple to match the Pierre Frey wallpaper. "I’m just not very good at doing anything plain," says Tamar.
