Tour Skier Gus Kenworthy's Contemporary LA Apartment
Orlando Soria worked with his client Gus Kenworthy, a skier, to design a custom and contemporary apartment featuring an expansive rooftop deck with Los Angeles city views. After a long renovation process, burdened with unexpected and prolonged rainfall, the end result was well worth the wait. We've linked to Kenworthy's outdoor furniture, so you can shop the look for your own space.

Gus Kenworthy Relaxes in His New Living Room
Skier Gus Kenworthy fell in love with this Los Angeles apartment because of "its location, ton of windows and lots of natural light."
Contemporary Living Room Proves White Is Not Boring
Orlando Soria designed a custom bench with a wooden base and leather cushion to go beneath one of the living room windows. "One of the things I'm most proud of about this room," says Soria, "is that there is one continuous line that that goes from the bench over to bottom of the shelving which makes the space look streamlined and clean.”
Contemporary Living Room With Dynamic Gallery Wall
On the walls of the living room, designer Orlando Soria created a dynamic gallery wall that mixes artwork in a range of sizes and frame colors and even incorporates some found objects.
Sculptural Coffee Table
Orlando Soria filled the living room with interesting textures and shapes, from the dynamic gallery wall to the coffee table's sculptural shape.
Expansive Windows and a Bubble Chandelier
Gus Kenworthy loved the big windows and wonderful light in this apartment, and the clean, airy aesthetic now in the living room beautifully complements those attributes.
Fireplace and Custom Built-Ins
This fireplace was originally covered in dark gray marble tile, which had an imposing presence in the room. So, designer Orlando Soria removed the tile and blended the fireplace and chimney with the rest of the room's white walls. He also turned an awkward niche alongside the fireplace into a handsome built-in bookshelf.
Window Bench With Warm, Leather Cushion
For the window bench in the living room, Orlando Soria topped a wooden base with a custom-made brown leather cushion. This nook was once awkward and unused and now brings added warmth and seating to the space.
Built-In Bookshelf Accents the Rest of the Room
In this apartment's original design, there was an open niche beside the fireplace that stretched all the way up to the ceiling. It was a space without much purpose, so designer Orlando Soria turned it into a built-in bookshelf with smooth wooden shelves that handsomely contrast with the white walls.
Eye-Catching Green Chairs in Dining Area
The apartment's living room eases gracefully into this sunny dining area, where Orlando Soria paired a streamlined modern chandelier with equally sculptural green dining chairs.
Simple, Yet Striking Chandelier
A round rug mimics the shape of the dining table and helps ground the dining area within this apartment's open concept layout. The chandelier above is an eye-catching, but not overbearing, piece that adds to the contemporary design of the space.
Eat-In Kitchen With Breakfast Nook
This kitchen is light and bright, and designer Orlando Soria even worked in a tiny table for two. Mint green chairs and a pale pink rug are fun bits of color, yet not too imposing in the small space.
Gorgeous Gray Hexagon Backsplash
Dark gray hexagonal tiles are a dramatic surprise in this kitchen, paired with bright white cabinets.
Contemporary Foyer With Curio Cabinet
Navy Blue Home Office and Guest Room
Gus Kenworthy and designer Orlando Soria picked out a dark navy blue for this home office, which doubles as a guest bedroom. Orlando liked this particular shade because it was "elegant and upscale, and not just crazy, kooky bright blue."
Pale Pink Bedroom With Eclectic Accents
Bold graphics—and some rustic antlers—push this pale pink bedroom in a fresh, contemporary direction. The black and white face pillows temper the sweetness of the soft color. And the room's varied textures mean there's always something interesting to look at.
Woven Armchair Adds Texture to Bedroom Space
This room's vast windows let in peaceful treetop views, so a corner armchair is perfectly positioned to enjoy them.
Moody Bedroom With Textured Walls
In his bedroom, Gus Kenworthy wanted to go dark, sexy and masculine with the look. Designer Orlando Soria prioritized texture in the space, giving the charcoal walls a concrete-like touch and using a satin finish for the ceiling and wainscoting.
Well-Equipped Outdoor Kitchen
Designer Orlando Soria gave this rooftop deck a total overhaul, creating three separate outdoor spaces: this gorgeous outdoor kitchen, a dining area and, up the stairs, an outdoor living area. Check out this outdoor rug here.
Rooftop Deck Lounge Area
For after dinner drinks and hanging out, a cozy fire pit and sectional sitting area is adjacent to this roof deck's new dining area. You can buy this outdoor sectional here.
Rooftop Sitting Area at Sunset
To create the lush outdoor environment Gus Kenworthy had been wishing for, Orlando Soria placed long, rectangular planters around the roof deck's perimeter and filled them with greenery. You can buy this contemporary style chair here.
Outdoor Dining Table With Bold, Red Chairs
Red mesh chairs pop against this covered dining area's gray walls and greenery backdrop. At night, string lights provide pretty illumination.
Expansive Deck Sitting Area
Orlando reconfigured the roof deck so that it would be, as he describes it, "three outdoor rooms at once. It's a beautiful kitchen, it's a living room and it's a dining room.” The "living room" is the biggest and offers up spots for Gus to lounge, relax and hang out with friends. Check out these red outdoor chairs here.
Outdoor Deck and Tulip Table With Expansive City Views
Gus's rooftop deck has panoramic views of LA, from Century City to downtown and all the way out to the ocean.
Chaise Loungue Chairs on Rooftop Deck
The totally revamped rooftop deck now has tons of space for lounging and, as Gus Kenworthy was hoping for when he bought the apartment, enjoying LA's beautiful weather. Buy the lounge chairs here.
Outdoor Living Room
Gus Kenworthy's roof deck acts like a second living room, with multiple sitting areas and outstanding views. It's the perfect place to hang out and entertain, two things on Gus' wish list for his outdoor space. You can buy this outdoor furniture here.
Stylish Rooftop Outdoor Furniture
Striped umbrellas deliver stylish shade to Gus' new rooftop sitting areas. Outdoor rugs (with a snappy graphic print no less) help the different seating arrangements feel purposeful in the big space.
