Brighten Up
"I selected chartreuse grasscloth for this project because it provided a visual connection to all the various live plantings of the terraced landscaping beyond," says designer James Rixner of this bright and welcoming kitchen design.
"A beautiful feature of natural grasscloth is its handmade texture. Each panel will have its own texture, and the panels will not [exactly] match one another. This is one of the most striking features of the beautiful material," James says.
A Warm Welcome
"We chose this casual, chunky weave grasscloth for its warmth and durability. This room acts as the family entrance to a house with four kids and a dog, so it gets a ton of wear and tear," says designer Julie Kleiner of Massucco Warner Miller Interior Design.
"The client didn’t want to invest in artwork to hang above the wainscoting but didn’t want to have just plain painted walls either. Our warm, straw-color grasscloth wallcovering is such a nice counterpoint," Julie says. "In a space with very little opportunity to have soft furnishings or accessories, this just fit the bill."
Get the Blues
"I chose the dark navy blue grasscloth to provide depth and texture to the room," says designer Linc Thelen. "This is a fresh, modern take [on] the traditional tan-brown grasscloth papers."
Due to the natural and varied slubbed texture of grasscloth paper, Linc suggests priming the wall the same color as the paper to aid in hiding the visible seams when hung.
Put It in Neutral
This contemporary dining room takes shape in a neutral palette. Introducing texture on the walls with grasscloth paper brings quiet, yet unique, dimension and warmth to the space and is especially lovely when paired with linen upholstery and natural wood.
Terrific Texture
Bringing organic texture and unique coloration to this powder room, grasscloth paper is a wonderful alternative to traditional wallpaper. It adds character and a tailored feel to the small space and works well within the transitional design.
Square Off
Playing up the texture and unique gradation inherent to the material, this outstanding design utilizes squares of grasscloth wallpaper hung in an alternating pattern. The effect is subtle, yet striking, keeping the space neutral but loaded with undeniably stylish appeal.
A Hint of Hue
The soft sage color of this grasscloth wallpaper results in a space that's both visually interesting and calming. The minimalistic styling of the room highlights the tactile characteristics of the paper. A wrapped and woven spherical light fixture keeps consistent the organic interest of the dining area.
Color and Character
We love the contrast between the bold cranberry-hued grasscloth walls and the cool blue accents. This compelling combo keeps the room from feeling too dark or dated — instead it's rich with color and character. The saturated red grasscloth brings a beautiful organic element along with its bold hue to really make a statement in this space.
A Masculine Mix
With its mix of patterns and textures, this home office is rich in visual interest and its grasscloth-covered walls really take center stage. "Grasscloth wallpaper does something to a room that paint cannot achieve," says Denise Davies of D2 Interieurs. "It adds an organic feeling and depth to the space that not many other elements can."
Rustic Richness
Natural grasscloth wallpaper paired with mossy green wainscoting give this living room its cozy feel. "We used grasscloth because of the beautiful organic texture it lends to the walls," says designer Angelica Henry. "It also offset the smooth, painted finish of the wainscot panels."
Industrial elements provide a balance of hard against soft to create the relaxed, rustic appeal of this space.
Effortless Appeal
In this clean and spare kitchen design, the grasscloth wallcovering brings a welcome organic element and plenty of texture. Paired with lots of white, shiny surfaces, the juxtaposition of the nubby wallpaper adds eye appeal and instantly warms the space while remaining within the neutral scheme.
Pleasingly Patterned
A boldly patterned grasscloth wallpaper is a striking and artistic statement in this otherwise neutral bedroom. The raw wood headboard offers another natural element to the design and works well with the organic texture of the paper.
Mix It Up
"I chose grasscloth to bring another texture to this room where dark cabinetry dominated the space," says designer Alana Villanueva of AVID Associates. "The blue tone also helps ground the artwork and make it a focal point."
With so many options in grasscloth, Alana suggests choosing one with texture that plays off the other pieces in the room. "If you have a lot of sleek, shiny surfaces, mix it up with a nubby, more organic and natural grasscloth. Instant eye candy!"
Delightful Dimension
A harmonious blend of textures from the grasscloth wallpaper to the velvet couch works well with a mix of metallic finishes in this beautiful living room. The grasscloth lends a modern organic element to the space, its tactile surface adding depth and dimension in a deep, neutral hue.
Balanced Beauty
Though this dining room boasts traditional-style molding and wainscoting, orange grasscloth revs things up with bold modernity. "I chose grasscloth because it adds a level of warmth, texture, color and sophistication to [the] room," says Denise Davies.
"Grasscloth wallpaper transforms a room and adds a beautiful natural element to a space," says Denise. "However it can be more expensive and harder to work with than other materials. Mistakes can be costly, so I suggest hiring a professional wallpaper hanger to install it."
Nice and Natural
The addition of grasscloth wallpaper to this bar area adds another layer of interest to the overall welcoming feel and wonderfully complements the room's vintage and antique pieces. While in keeping with the natural tones of the woods, the grasscloth lends its unique texture and characteristic pattern to the mix.
Opposites Attract
In this contemporary bedroom, a burnt orange grasscloth creates a sense of warmth and provides a stunning backdrop as an accent wall behind the bed. The wallpaper's natural slub texture is a wonderful contrast to the sleek furnishings such as the streamlined glass lamp and square shade.
Subtly Stunning
"We wanted a wallpaper that flowed with the updated traditional color scheme of the main areas," says Raquel Skrobarczyk of Heather Scott Home & Design. "The patterned grasscloth adds a fun, unexpected element to the space."
Considering grasscloth wallpaper? "For smaller spaces, you can create a real jewel box in spaces like a powder bath. Grasscloth is a timeless material that will go with a lot of different styles of homes whether modern or traditional," Raquel says.
Printed and Pretty
A traditional grasscloth wallcovering in a gorgeous lilac hue gets a shot of sophistication with a screenprinted damask design, giving this master bedroom a focal wall that's as elegant as its furnishings. The soft hue is picked up in the velvet-covered furniture to create a cohesive color story throughout the space.
Sophisticated and Smart
Surprise! This lovely lavender paper only appears to be true grasscloth. "It's actually vinyl made to look like grasscloth because it's in a bathroom [and is] water-resistant," says designer Shirry Dolgin.
Why choose grasscloth or a vinyl version for a space? "Grasscloth has a rich texture that is more luxurious than paint," Shirry says. If you're considering grasscloth, Shirry says to expect seams and some variation in the color and to look for something that doesn’t fray a lot, as that may look worn or sloppy.
