The design intent for this urban exterior was to design a version of a traditional brownstone, and to give an appreciative nod to the history and architecture of the older part of town, with an updated look that has an eye towards the future of the community. One of the ways this was achieved was by using an interesting mix of materials. Brick, stucco, custom millwork paneling and cornice detailing, and custom iron details complete the look.

Black framework creates a beautiful contemporary look over the neutral stucco and brick of this home exterior. A spacious and relaxing balcony acts as a cover over the ground level porch creating open and covered outdoor sitting space. A line of shrubbery borders the sidewalk to mark the home perimeter.

This entry stands out with ironwork railings that delineate the property from the sidewalk. The ironwork is softened with traditional plants such as boxwood borders and fragrant evergreen plants like Rosemary, which gives a welcoming feeling and a sense of arrival to the front entry of the home. The front door is treated with Baroque seeded glass, which serves two purposes- to let light in and to create more of a sense of privacy than a clear glass would.

In the foyer, a patterned tile was chosen as an area “rug” inset to create a sense of surprise and drama upon arrival at the front door. The custom railing and wood stair treads lead up to the living room for an open and spacious connection to the home interior. A white bench supports a piece of art for added texture to decorate the foyer.

The custom railing, wood stair treads, beams, and stained beadboard ceiling treatments all collaborate in making this a successful updated brownstone. White walls add to the spacious feel of the design by keeping the room bright and airy. Neutral furniture in the sitting room blends beautifully with the floor and keeps a classic and timeless look to the design.

Stylish hardwood floor makes a seamless transition between this spacious kitchen and the connected living room. A large kitchen island features upholstered bench seating with a nailhead trim and polished marble countertops. Flower shaped stools and neutral sectionals create equally sophisticated seating in the living room.

A white support beam provides a simple room separation in the open design of this home. Hardwood floor and white walls create a seamless connection between the rooms. Nailhead trim on the living room stools, kitchen bar stools and dining room chairs creates a cohesive element throughout the space. Darker wood furniture pieces add a warm tone to the calming, light neutrals in the design.
