How to Paint an Ombre Effect on a Dresser

The ombre effect is achieved by starting with the deepest shade of the common color at the lowest point of the surface, then gradually getting lighter towards the top. Once the placement is determined, assign a color to each drawer. Since drawers are often slightly off, it’s best to mark the colors before painting them. This will ensure a successful placement.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Dresser

A solid wooden chest works best for this application due to the proper adhesion of paint. In order to achieve the intended effect of ombre, use a wooden chest with at least three drawers.

Step 2: Choosing Colors

The key to the ombre look is a slight differentiation in tone and shade of the same color. Choose one main color, and then vary darkness and lightness for a balanced look. Often the easiest way to do this is to use shades on the same paint chip.

Step 3: Sand Surfaces

In order for the paint to properly adhere to the wooden chest, you’ll need to rough up the surface or remove the existing finish. To do this, use fine-grit sandpaper and a sanding block. Once the finish is loosened or removed, wipe the surface of the chest clean using a damp cloth.

Step 4: Add Paint to Casing

Use a paint sprayer to cover the casing (sides and top) of the chest with the chosen color. We choose to paint the frame white and paint the drawers various shades of green, which really helped the ombre effect stand out.

Step 5: Paint and Dry

Based on the proper placement, spray each drawer front with its chosen color. Allow paint to dry for at least 48 hours before bringing the chests inside.
