Tour a Midcentury Modern Collector's Atlanta Home Loaded With Crazy Color

A local celebrity known for his funky Edgewood Avenue bar Church and his highly original artworks often featuring repurposed vintage paintings, Grant Henry has been a lifelong collector of midcentury modern furniture and objects and brings his love of those iconic shapes and colors to his Atlanta home.

More color, primary brights, sleek midcentury lines all add up to the wit and energy that defines this Old Fourth Ward Atlanta home.

Who wouldn’t want to start the day here? The quaint breakfast area includes a classic Saarinen table and arm chairs, made even cooler by alternating the upholstery fabrics. The Random Light above the table was a perfect choice to allow natural light to penetrate in daytime and add a soft glow at night, not to mention casting cool shadows on the walls. The custom rug from Meyer’s Carpet was essential to the success of this room. It grounds the space beautifully, adds texture and warmth, plus made it so that the white table didn’t appear to be growing from the white floor. Grant is obviously never alone for morning coffee; he’s got at least forty or so guests just over his shoulder. In a true “gallery style” application, the wall boasts an impressive collection of porcelain masks.

In a perfect symbiosis, the modernist shapes of midcentury designers Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Eero Saarinen are featured in Grant's stunning Atlanta home.

The vivid primary colors of these lollipop screens revs up the green palate of Grant Henry's outdoor space. With color like this in design, who needs flowers? Grant keeps things simple with turf and monkey grass in his garden.

Grant's home is an ideal backdrop for a curator or simply a collector of beautiful things. In the kitchen, Henry has taken a minimal approach to addressing the windows. White walls and white floors helps to accent his favorite pieces thereby adding visual interest. Grant initially wanted to change the light wood cabinets, but ultimately decided against it. I assured him that the simplicity of natural wood is perfect for resale and that when guests walk into the space, cabinets are certainly not the primary focus. From the teak collection above the cabinets, to the yellow cookware on the island, to the green plants…this kitchen is full of life.

In addition to having amazing taste, Grant also has an undeniable green thumb. The twin fiddle leaf fig trees flanking the pair of white leather Eames lounges are the clear MVPs in this space. Believe it or not the case goods on the left were not all purchased together. Grant found them from multiple sources and was more pleased than anyone that the pieces came together so well. Here in his second floor home office, Grant finds comfort in the classic sectional facing the outdoors or on the upper level patio perfect for watching fireworks celebrations in downtown Atlanta.

Grant’s comedy/tragedy masks collection (displayed in the breakfast area) is his grandson’s favorite point of interest when he visits. The perfectly appointed masks on the loft’s white walls add the perfect colorful touch. Grant infused a sense of humor into what could have otherwise been a museum of Knoll and vintage furnishings. His use of color and specific taste in artwork personalizes his space and makes it uniquely his own. Those elements separate him from every other collector and are his design thumbprint.
