Vintage Townhouse Remodel

With a modest budget and a timeline of three months, interior designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Darron O'Bonnon remodeled this Atlanta townhouse by mixing high-low materials and playing with both muted and bright colors.

In order to put an unused wall between the powder room and the kitchen to good use, it was outfitted with a console table, open storage elements, table lamps and framed photographs. This resulted in the look of an actual entry, although the home doesn’t officially have one.

To put an unused wall between the powder room and the kitchen to use, it was outfitted with a console table, open storage elements and table lamps. This resulted in the look of an actual entry, although the home doesn't officially have one.

To pack the powder room with style without spending too much, the walls were covered with a large-scale geometric wallpaper in neutral shades of gray. Wallpaper is a great way to drastically transform a small space with minimal cost.

Before: Kitchen

In its existing state, the kitchen was only half utilized with one entire side left open and void of cabinets. To maximize the space, the homeowner wanted to extend the cabinetry and countertop across the back wall, then add a custom kitchen island to the center of the room.

To keep the kitchen remodel budget-friendly, the existing cabinet casing was left as-is, additional base cabinetry was added, then all cabinets were faced with new gray door fronts.

After purchasing his 1,100-square-foot townhouse in Midtown Atlanta, homeowner Eric Steur decided to hire a designer to add personality to his modest, nondescript guest bedroom.

This modest, nondescript guest bedroom needed to feel more inviting for the homeowner's frequent guests.

In its updated state, the guest bedroom is almost unrecognizable. To add warmth and texture, the walls were covered in a metallic, earth toned grasscloth. In order to make the modern property less stark and more inviting, the guest bedroom was furnished with classic pieces including a newly upholstered arm chair and a traditional wooden medallion from Spain.

Shared by both male and female guests, the overall look and feel of the guest space was kept neutral. The bed area is made up of a custom headboard, end tables used as nightstands, comfortable, earth-toned linens and industrial oversized pendant lights which free up tabletop surfaces for books and accessories.

To add richness and warmth to a space, consider layering several shades of different earth tones with wall covering, wooden furniture, tinted glass and upholstery fabrics. While the guest suite is definitely considered neutral, the layering effect keeps it rich and sophisticated.

The contractor-grade 1990s guest bathroom was desperately in need of a cosmetic update.

For approximately $1000, the guest bathroom was overhauled thanks to a clever use of graphic wallpaper, covering the floor with wood look porcelain tile, masculine art found at a flea market, painting the existing cabinets and changing out the hardware, and replacing the laminate countertop with butcher block.

After: Guest Bathroom

For approximately $1000, the guest bathroom was overhauled thanks to a clever use of graphic wallpaper, wood-inspired porcelain tile and flea market artwork. To keep this remodel even more cost efficient, the existing cabinets were repainted and the hardware was replaced, while the laminate countertop was replaced with now-trending butcher block.

To create a master suite that’s clean and classic, Brian and Darron chose a tranquil shade of blue-grey for the walls, trim and ceiling. For masculine appeal, Brian outfitted the room with a mix of rustic, primitive and midcentury-modern touches.

In its updated state, the master bedroom features a classic, midcentury modern Nelson saucer pendant made of white vinyl, 11-foot drapery, a small seating area and a custom bed layered with sand tones and blues.

In its updated state, the master bedroom features a classic, midcentury-modern Nelson saucer pendant made of white vinyl, 11-foot draperies, a small seating area and a custom bed layered with sand tones and blues.

A custom headboard upholstered in an ombre linen anchors the large space. To keep the sleeping area well-lit at night, midcentury modern lamps made of walnut and smoked lucite were placed atop rustic night stands.

A custom headboard upholstered in an ombre linen anchors the large space. To keep the sleeping area well lit at night, midcentury-modern lamps made of walnut and smoked Lucite were placed atop rustic night stands.

For an extra layer of detail, the upholstered ombre headboard is adorned with bronze nail heads.

A sculptural approach was taken to create the seating area next to the window. To pack the bedroom with rustic touches, a pair of chairs made from handscraped wood and cowhide flank a traditional gate leg table.

A sculptural approach was taken to create the seating area next to the window. To pack the bedroom with rustic touches, a pair of chairs made from handscraped wood and cowhide flank a traditional gate leg table.

To mix modern and traditional, an oak gate leg table offers up display space for a midcentury modern globe and a 1960s knight sculpture made from iron. Although many of the design elements in the bedroom are custom, the budget was balanced by picking up accessories from flea markets and thrift stores.

To mix modern and traditional, an oak gate leg table offers up display space for a midcentury-modern globe and a 1960s knight sculpture made from iron. Although many of the design elements in the bedroom are custom, the budget was balanced by picking up accessories from flea markets and thrift stores.

A wall outside of the master bathroom is packed with storage and personality thanks to a rustic modern console table which offers concealed storage for sweaters and jeans and a collection of vintage finds picked up over the years.

The biggest splurge in the high-low master bedroom was custom cabinetry and shelving used to replace the existing closet components. To keep the look timeless and versatile, the wood was sprayed in a medium gray with a satin finish.

As far as budget was concerned, the master bathroom was the second most expensive part of the remodel. Originally lacking in character, the updated bathroom would be covered in shades of blue and gray and feature a new, custom vanity.
