Find the Right Spot
If you and your family struggle to maintain a clean house throughout the year, creating a custom cleaning station may be the answer. At HGTV Urban Oasis 2019 the door leading to the basement was the perfect canvas for organizing cleaning supplies.
Location is Everything
Make sure your station is easy to access and in a high-traffic common area. If you don't have an empty shelf to spare, don't sweat it. A few Command™ Hooks, lightweight caddies, and the back of a door are all you need to get your essential cleaning supplies in order.
Delegate Chores
Don’t try to do it all yourself or all at once. Delegate some of the weekly cleaning to your partner and/or kids. Writing it down and keeping everyone accountable is the key to making this approach work. Hang a clipboard by your supplies, so everyone is crystal clear on their responsibilities and timeline. Adopting a “team approach” to cleaning and doing it on a daily or weekly basis ensures a tidier home.
Handy Tool Kit
Hang plenty of hooks to wrangle your go-to cleaning tools. And put some thought into where clips, hooks, and bins are located on the door. Lay all your supplies out on flat surface, then arrange them to make the most of your space. Once you have your station all planned out, secure the hooks and clips to the door where they’re needed.
Surface Savvy
Do a little research when it comes to your home’s high-traffic surfaces like flooring, countertops, and backsplashes. High-powered all-purpose cleaners aren’t always suitable for delicate finishes or natural materials. And don’t overlook yearly maintenance if a surface requires it. Sealing grout and stone not only keeps them looking good, it can also help prevent future stains.
Stick to Essentials
If space is tight, stick to essentials like glass cleaner, a deodorizing room spray, and an all-purpose cleaner for stickier messes. Keep paper towel on hand and invest in a few quality microfiber cleaning cloths, because they’re eco-friendly and perfect for light cleaning and dusting.
Not Just for Clothes
If you have pets, you know the value of a lint roller, so stash a few in your cleaning station. Pet hair and dander on upholstery, bedding, and lampshades can wreak havoc on a guest's allergies, so it's important to remove it regularly. HINT: Weekly lint rolling is an ideal job for the kiddos- they’ll think it’s fun!
Clean Sweep
If there’s one cleaning task you want to stay on top of, it’s keeping floors clean. A dirty floor isn’t just unsanitary, caked-on grime can damage the finish over time, and that can lead to expensive repairs. We love these Command™ Broom Grippers, because they make it easy to store mops and brooms almost anywhere.mops and brooms almost anywhere. Don’t forget to include a large dustpan, too!
