The garage ceiling, clad in pecky cypress, references the home's interior details. The vaulted space with catwalk-style shelf provides ample room to store surfboards and small sailing vessels.
Jacksonville Beach street light banners double as wall art and provide the space's needed pop of color and drama.
A custom pulley system, designed by house planner Jack Thomasson and HGTV Smart Home carpenter David Brown, hoists surfboards and beach gear into the vaulted second-story space.
"We have a two-story garage that's functioning as a single-story garage," says builder Glenn Layton. "But if the need came down the road that someone wanted to add a mother-in-law suite, a game room or an office, it's preengineered to accept that down the road."
For house planner Jack Thomasson, the garage is an essential part of the HGTV Smart Home 2013 design and experience. "If you lived here and took full advantage of everything these beaches have to offer," he says, "you have the gear to do it and a place to put it."
