Designed and constructed to resemble an old boathouse, the garage lives larger than its modest footprint. Cement floors protected under a marine-grade sealant are both hard-working and stylish.

Display racks, installed on board-and-batten siding, turn surfboards into wall art.

With plenty of storage space for surfboards and beach toys, the garage is designed to easily house two vehicles.

The winner of the HGTV Smart Home 2013 Giveaway will receive a 2013 GMC® Terrain® Denali®, a small luxury SUV that boasts a high level of technology and performance.

The garage ceiling, clad in pecky cypress, references the home's interior details. The vaulted space with catwalk-style shelf provides ample room to store surfboards and small sailing vessels.

Jacksonville Beach street light banners double as wall art and provide the space's needed pop of color and drama.

A custom pulley system, designed by house planner Jack Thomasson and HGTV Smart Home carpenter David Brown, hoists surfboards and beach gear into the vaulted second-story space.

"We have a two-story garage that's functioning as a single-story garage," says builder Glenn Layton. "But if the need came down the road that someone wanted to add a mother-in-law suite, a game room or an office, it's preengineered to accept that down the road."

For house planner Jack Thomasson, the garage is an essential part of the HGTV Smart Home 2013 design and experience. "If you lived here and took full advantage of everything these beaches have to offer," he says, "you have the gear to do it and a place to put it."
