Gather Round

Not every home has a dedicated cocktail lounge—but that doesn’t mean you can’t create one. This area was originally an undefined space in the basement of this year’s HGTV Dream Home, located between the stairwell and a hallway leading to two bedrooms. Designer Brian Patrick Flynn realized the potential once he and his team spent a bit of time in the space, leading him to install a wet bar and an inviting mid-mod seating area.

The Main Ingredient

If you have an under-counter wine fridge, you have yourself a bona fide bar. This stainless steel model has fully extendable shelves for easy reach.

Coastal Chic

Neutral finishes and a contemporary point of view are the key to making this space feel sophisticated. Subtle gray cabinets with black hardware are on trend, and the backsplash is a highly textured, shiny white clay tile laid in a grid rather than a traditional offset brick pattern. The whale-themed artwork in this room is a nuanced touch that helps this bar area feel like a real piece of the waterfront.

Behind the Scenes

The side view of the room gives you a peek at the lounge’s plush tufted chairs, whitewashed floors, bar sink, and matte black Esque™ faucet by Delta® Faucet. The faucet’s Touch₂O^® Technology allows you to turn water on and off with a single touch, making cocktail prep much easier.

Smart Seating

If you want to encourage your guests to get to know each other, two sofas facing each other across a coffee table is just the ticket. Brian designed this den, which is also located in the basement, to spark conversation and provide a comfy place to play games. There’s a TV if you need it, of course, but also tons of interesting artwork to get guests in a chatty mood.

Here’s a savvy storage idea: the den’s coffee table pops open to store books and games—and the top actually comes up to dining height when fully opened. “You could actually have a dinner party in here,” Brian says.

The open kitchen offers a casual, relaxed place to congregate, with easy access to the back deck and its stunning waterfront views.

Hard and Soft

The pantry is almost as inviting a gathering spot as the main kitchen, with entertaining essentials stored in the open and all within easy reach. The rigid angles of the custom cabinetry are offset by soft round shapes throughout—from the storage canisters to the beautiful round pizza board that functions as a piece of art. Built-in storage for wine bottles and glasses frees up shelf and counter space.

The Hot Spot

The kitchen island, outfitted in white with contrasting natural wood tones, invites guests to cozy up to the bar while the host preps snacks and drinks.
