More than just a thoroughfare, the stairwell and second floor landing offer a mix of industrial, modern and traditional elements worthy of a second look.

The space at the top of a staircase is often an afterthought when it comes to design. Not so in HGTV Dream Home 2014: Interior designer Linda Woodrum turned it into a functional seating area filled with artful objects and mountain views.

Contemporary furniture and gold-tinged accessories create an inviting alcove at the top of stairs. Muted patterns and soft textures indicate this space is meant for quiet relaxation.

The more traditionally-furnished landing gives way to the ultra-modern staircase.

The stainless steel mesh railing's grid pattern is one of interior designer Linda Woodrum's favorite features in the home: "One of the wonderful things about it is when the light comes in it creates patterns on the wall," she says.

The modern stairs made of Douglas fir slabs that have "basically just been oiled," interior designer Linda Woodrum says.

The second floor's steeply pitched roof and exposed eaves make for a dramatic walk between the landing and family room.

Iron-framed light fixtures with interior white circular shades line the hallway, echoing the mix of industrial and contemporary pieces seen throughout this space.

Four black-and-white photos in crisp white mats frame the alcove sitting area.

Artist Elizabeth Carmel, who lives in Truckee, Calif. part of the year, captured these moments of natural beauty in the Lake Tahoe area.

Upon reaching the top of the staircase, the kids' bunkroom and child-friendly bathroom sit just to the right.

The same bamboo flooring featured on the second floor is used as an accent on the stairwell wall.

A smooth, oiled railing contrasts against the industrial steel and metal accents on the staircase.

Floating stairs without risers give the staircase a thoroughly modern look.

Almost midcentury modern in style, this hallway features ample natural light to keep it feeling bright and airy. Views over the top of the living wing and into the forest abound. Soft gray drapes cover each window should privacy be required.

This black-and-white oil on canvas by artist Annie Hooker depicts a vintage motorcycle ride. It was purchased at a gallery in Truckee, Calif.

"If you were a guest in the home, you could come out here and read while your companion was sleeping," says interior designer Linda Woodrum.

A painted hutch with a bright-red interior is visible from the opposite end of the second-floor hallway, in the door of the kids' room.
