Gleaming Brazilian chestnut floors greet guests as they enter the front hall of HGTV Dream Home 2010. Tongue-and-groove pine ceiling, decorative beams inspired by traditional vigas and smoke bell lanterns complete the look.
Plinths, custom-built by a local mill, flank the entry and complement the natural wood ceilings.
The sole decoration in the front entry, baskets provide a “quiet announcement of the entrance,” says interior designer Linda Woodrum.
A spiraling pattern in the coiled bowl basket provides just a hint of texture and subtle color variation.
The entry hall provides a view of the great room, back patio, brightened by a gas fireplace, and mountain vistas beyond.
Oversized smoke bell lanterns illuminate the hallway. “They had the right mass for the hallway,” explains interior designer Linda Woodrum. “The perfect feel against the rough wood.”
Tucked in its own cozy nook off the front entry, a conversation area invites guests to enjoy the fire and connect. “If you had a friend come over, and it’s a cold crazy day, you’d probably be looking for a more intimate space,” explains Woodrum. “It makes the foyer feel larger and more expansive.”
Oversized wing chairs, upholstered in a plush turquoise fabric, face the cozy gas fireplace and provide a quiet escape. Sliding glass doors that flank the fireplace lead into the home theater.
Custom ceramic tile crafted by local artist Erin Adams and her husband, renowned ceramics artist Michael Corney, provides the "wow" factor in the sitting area. Chosen independently of the upholstery fabric, the two pair perfectly. “It was meant to be because the tile and the fabric on the chairs were exactly the same color,” adds Woodrum.
The Rinnai gas fireplace provides needed warmth, when sunny days give way to chilly evenings.
White cymbidium orchids, set in a glass bowl of river pebbles, complement light colors in the Persian rug and decorative throw pillows.
Recessed lighting, paired with natural light from a solar tube, dramatically highlights the decorative tile. Guests can nestle in the wing chairs or warm themselves while perched on the granite fireside ledge.
