With easy access from both the great room and first-floor guest suite, the casual-chic outdoor living area invites cozy gatherings.
Soft, touchable and durable fabrics pull inspiration from the great room's decor. "I didn't want to introduce new colors because I wanted this room to be part of the palette that was happening inside," says interior designer Linda Woodrum.
Quilted pillows reference the collection of fabrics chosen for the great room interior.
Sturdy, solid aluminum furnishings are paired with cushions covered in stain-, mold- and mildew-resistant performance fabric. The chocolate upholstery color complements the bold, graphic, all-weather area rug.
Paired with muted fabrics, a hand-hammered aluminum bowl provides a hint of sparkle.
Birch branches, tucked in a moss-topped planter, offer texture and a connection to the property's natural landscape elements.
Dark light fixtures preserve the nighttime environment. The modern cage design complements the home's own modern rustic style.
The ceiling's see-through effect lends architectural interest. Exposed rafters and corrugated metal roofing also continue the invented story of an old stone structure or farmhouse extended over time.
A nearly 12-foot island houses a gas grill with rotisserie. Two warming drawers and undercounter storage accommodate the grill master.
Statement-making architectural elements, columns with timber haunches tell a story of rusticity.
Durable, low-maintenance composite decking in a gray finish gives the illusion of age.
Locally quarried limestone forms the base of structural pillars. The thin-set cladding material tells a stylish — and sustainable — story.
Karl Foerster grasses create a natural barrier of privacy around the living room. The low-maintenance, ornamental grass provides green foliage in spring that transitions to golden tan in the summer and fall.
Clusters of feather reed grass complement natural meadow grasses that surround the property.
Snacks stand ready for moments of relaxation. A twisted madras tray, which totes easily from great room and kitchen to outdoor living room, keeps casual dinnerware organized.
Thin-set Utah limestone surrounds the vent-free gas fireplace, a stainless steel and extruded-aluminum unit protected in a high-temperature, powder-coated finish.
Grommet curtains may be drawn to create a cozy nook of privacy and buffer the space from cool breezes.
Lamb's wool throws, draped over seating, continue the great room color story and provide a cozy cover on chilly evenings.
The great room design aesthetic, one of comfort and quiet calm, extends to this outdoor space. "There's a wonderful peacefulness about being outside and having no sense of time," says Linda. "This is just forever."
