Industrial Materials at Work in Unexpected Ways in Desert Home
Angelica Henry Design uses industrial materials like rebar and chicken wire in unexpected ways to create a new take on rustic industrial in the Rock Bottom estate in North Scottsdale, Ariz. The homeowner, a talented woodworker, pitched in some of his own creations to finish off this desert gem.

Setting the Scene
The glow of the chandelier through the transparent pivoting door leads guests into the spacious foyer. The sawcut concrete pattern in the entry sets the tone for the bespoke features showcased throughout this North Scottsdale, Arizona, home.
Living, Indoor and Out
Pocketing glass doors disappear at the touch of a button to create a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Pattern and Texture
The goal for the fireplace was to create an architectural feature with enough visual weight to balance the large scale of the room and ceiling trusses. The rebar elements cast dramatic shadows across the golden walls, which were upholstered in burlap and then painted over for texture.
Rustic Industrial
Industrial and rustic materials used on the fireplace and throughout the home's design include corten steel, rebar rods and angle iron.
Strong Lines
A custom sawcut concrete floor patten was painstakingly laid out throughout the main living area to best accommodate all the angles and transitions throughout the rooms. The strong architectural lines are highlighted and enhanced by the interior details throughout every aspect of this space -- from the fireplace to the custom dining table, which was fabricated by the talented homeowner.
Steel, Glass and Wood
In the kitchen, steel and glass upper cabinets disappear into an interior window, which allows as much light as possible into the kitchen and provide a spot to display art and dishes. Quarter-inch strips of glass were fused together to create the upper island top which floats above a hemlock countertop thanks to the support of steel hidden within the cabinets.
Custom Kitchen Art
The kitchen appliances disappear into the custom art wall, which adds vibrant color and energy to the non-traditional kitchen. Artist Rob Stenberg painted the Southwest-inspired design onto reclaimed barn wood, and touch-latch cabinetry keeps the wall looking more like an art installation than kitchen cabinetry.
Feed Zone
A zinc-clad barn door conceals this walk in pantry when not in use. Shelves made from chicken wire and angle iron allow crumbs fall to the counter instead of being stuck on the shelves, making for easy cleanup.
Unusual Materials
Double entry doors upholstered with a patterned fabric lead to the home's powder room. The back wall showcases an open-weave bark wallcovering that leaves some of the red wall beyond exposed. The sink is repurposed chicken wire filled with river rocks with a function stainless sink hidden below the wood timbers. Water falls into the basin through the rocks, creating a nice soothing sound.
Cohesive Design
Reclaimed barnwood, stone and zinc used on the fireplace feature wall in the private family room call back to elements used in the public living spaces for a cohesive look. A fender in front of the fireplace provides a cozy place to sit and soak up the warmth.
Desert Views
Retractable doors open up to allow for the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living. Even when closed, the doors offer panoramic views of the surrounding Arizona desert.
Desert Oasis
Water tumbles across a steel structure surrounding the grill and into a basin below, creating a soothing sound for the pool area. The deck is clad in Oklahoma fieldstone, helping the property to blend with its natural desert surroundings.
A Study in Contrasts
Contrasting wood finishes give the office a sense of warmth while highlighting the custom spun glass rondelles set into the cabinet panels. The panels slide to the sides to conceal bookshelves and showcase hand-turned wood pieces made by the homeowner. A zinc panel installed behind the center shelves highlights the warm wood colors of the bowls.
Now You See It ...
When the glass panels are drawn to the center, functional bookshelves and task lighting are revealed.
Master Retreat
Rough-sawn fir planks set in a board-and-batten style clad the walls in the master bedroom. The attached sitting room enjoys sweeping views of the surrounding Arizona desert.
Suite Style
A checkerboard tile floor sets the tone in the master bathroom. The floor is highlighted with an accent of rustic wood at the center. Skylights bring in beautiful natural light. The legs of the vanities are made from bundles of rebar, echoing the materials used on the living room's fireplace.
Custom Touches
The lacquered wood counters and sinks on the vanities -- an unexpected material application -- were custom fabricated by the homeowner. The mirrors were ready-made but embellished with an extra layer in order to create more contrast against the tile.
Picture This
This double slipper copper tub takes center stage with amazing views of a mountain and surrounding lands through the picture window. Antler-printed drapery panels and a pair of pendant lights soften the space.
On Display
The makeup vanity showcases a soapstone counter and glass cabinets to display perfume bottles and trinkets, reminiscent of the kitchen's upper cabinetry.
Cozy Den
Tall wood wainscoting paired with grasscloth give the den a cozy feel. The room is trimmed with large timbers and steel headers, and the hard-edged and soft materials balance each other for a rustic and comfortable environment. The cabinet is a repurposed set of drawers paired with a custom metal base.
Pony Up to the Bar
The bar showcases hair-on-hide panels as wallcovering and floating glass shelves suspended by threaded rebar rods with bolts to support the glass. The cowhides are arranged diagonally to create additional visual interest where they meet in the middle of the wall.
A Touch of Light
Colorful tiles, pendant lights hung from the skylight interior and fun hardware make the guest bathroom a fun and quirky space. The skylight above the vanity adds a lively touch of natural light.
Color and Pattern
The colorful wallcovering, bold tile patterns and distressed wood countertop add a sense of lightheartedness to a second guest bathroom. Steel I-beams separate the two sink areas for a uniquely rustic detail. A skylight above the vanity brings natural light to the space
