Bio

Lisa Munniksma is a writer, farmer, avid home cook and long-term traveler, and she loves telling stories about all of these subjects. In the garden, Lisa has experience growing vegetables in Belgium, ornamentals in Puerto Rico and Alaska, and plant of all kinds in Kentucky. If you can’t find her behind her laptop or working with food, Lisa is probably on a road trip or a hiking trail.

Experience

Lisa has written for dozens of publications online and in print as well as ghostwritten several books. She was a contributing editor for two books, “Epic Homesteading” (Cool Springs Press, 2024) and “All New Square Foot Gardening, 4th Edition” (Cool Springs Press, 2025). The former editor of Hobby Farms and Urban Farm magazines, most of Lisa’s work in the past 15 years has related to farming, gardening, food and food systems.

Lisa dabbles in creative nonfiction writing and received two grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women to explore food, farming and the outdoors from a feminist perspective. Her personal writing has been published by About Place Journal and Orion.

In line with her unending curiosity and her interest in meeting and learning from people, Lisa was the host of the “Hobby Farms Presents: Growing Good” podcast about farming and food systems for 3 1/2 years. She also offers communications and project management and facilitation services for nonprofits, farmers and other small businesses in the food system.

Education

Lisa holds a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Delaware Valley University. At the time, she knew she didn’t want to be a veterinarian or nutritionist—typical career paths for this degree—but she relished the time spent with the animals, large and small. This nontraditional degree continues to serve her in surprising ways through her writing and audio storytelling. She also completed the North American Food Systems Network (NAFSN) Agri-Cluster Resilience and Expansion (ACRE) Facilitator Course, which equipped her with the skills to guide community-based groups toward meaningful, actionable outcomes.
