$600 Budget

Our secret weapon for meeting this budget? Paint! First we picked up this roomy cypress swing and painted the unfinished wood bright blue (Capri by Sherwin-Williams). We used the leftovers plus a lighter shade (Cloudless by Sherwin-Williams) to stencil a drop cloth, and — voilà! — it’s a rug. The coffee table is a pallet scored for free from a grocery store that we painted yellow (Decisive Yellow by Sherwin-Williams) and put wheels on. $1,600 Budget

After scooping up this ’60s furniture set — a love seat and two chairs — for a steal on Craigslist, we had the dated cushions reupholstered, then rented a paint sprayer from a home-improvement store to paint the rattan frames. The technique is not only fast, but it also allows you to choose any shade of latex paint (we used Dishy Coral by Sherwin-Williams) rather than relying on limited spray paint colors. For privacy, we added a white room divider, then styled a metal bar cart in front of it. Two ceramic garden stools serve as mini coffee tables.

$3,000 Budget

A resortworthy synthetic-wicker sectional kick-started our decorating plan, and the matching ottoman doubles as a coffee table. The extra money in our budget allowed us to have curtains made to hang from not just one side, but two! We went shopping for pillows and planters in our color scheme of blues and greens, and we couldn’t resist that diagonal-stripe navy-and-white polypropylene rug. We found the side table at a flea market and spray-painted it tropical green (John Deere Green by Rust-Oleum).
