Black awnings with white trim and open sides echo the house’s shutters and shade the west-facing front windows from late afternoon sun. A portico with four round, fluted columns makes this stucco Dutch Colonial even more elegant.
New Build With Plenty of Character
Location: Saratoga Springs, NY
Built in: 2013
Size: 2,300 sq. ft.
Paint colors: Smoky Blue, Sherwin-Williams; (trim) Swiss Coffee, Valspar
“We wanted our new build to look at home in our neighborhood, where houses have lots of character. “The front yard has changed the most over the years," say homeowners Donna and Mark Herbener. “For 19 years, we lived in a house one street over. We’d walk by this one every day, and we watched it go through a major reno," say homeowners Hildreth and Shawn Stafford. "The architect did a great job making it modern yet charming. "It’s much more cheerful than our last home’s black door.”

The 1940s door is original to the house, but homeowner Allison Williams chose the egg-yolk yellow paint after spying it on a neighbor’s house. “It pops whether there’s snow or greenery around it,” she says. The brick on the front of the house was painted to match the vinyl siding — a blue gray color that shifts depending on the light and time of day.

Paint colors: Try (siding) Athenian Blue, (white trim) White Dove and (brown trim) Chestnut by Benjamin Moore for a similar look.

Charming Navy and Beige Abode
Location: Essex County, NJ
Built in: 1928
Size: 1,850 sq. ft.
Paint colors: (house) Deep Reservoir, (trim) Whisper and (doors, shutters and decorative trim) Crossroads, Dunn-Edwards
“We didn’t like the outside of this house at first," say homeowners Sally and Joe Monaghan. "The porch was screened in, the paint colors drab and the shrubs overgrown. But as we’ve painted it and added new plants, the exterior has become our favorite part.” The home is one of just a few in the neighborhood that still has the original moon-cutout shutters. Beige paint makes them pop against the blue siding.
