Amaryllis Brings Glamour to the Garden

Glorious amaryllis flowers bring gorgeous glitz to indoor scenery with their larger-than-life blossoms. What’s even better is that these bulb bloomers couldn’t be easier to grow. They need little care to unfurl their showstopping flowers. You’ll find amaryllis bulbs for sale in fall and winter. Let them bloom in time for spreading holiday cheer or keep them cool until mid- to late December to enjoy blossoms six to eight weeks later.

This is a large-flowered variety whose name — ‘Glamour’ — says it all. Red petals edged in white blend with any holiday décor or simply brighten winter rooms. ‘Ferrari’ Amaryllis

Just like its auto namesake, this amaryllis variety opens luxurious blooms that are the epitome of high-end beauty. ‘Ferrari’ flowers feature velvety red petals that unfurl to a whopping 7 inches across. Like all large-flowered amaryllis varieties, ‘Ferrari’ stems can be top heavy. To skip an in-pot stake, drop potted bulbs into tall cachepots to support blossom-bedecked stems.

‘Dancing Queen’ Amaryllis

If you want an amaryllis that will make you smile, look to ‘Dancing Queen.’ This beauty unfurls whirling petticoats of red and white petals four to five layers deep. It’s truly stunning. Blossoms measure 5 to 6 inches across.

‘Mont Blanc’ Amaryllis

A single stem of amaryllis is lovely, but a bowl full is downright fabulous. Here white large-flowered ‘Mont Blanc’ amaryllis holds court over forced white hyacinths to create an indoor garden rich with color and fragrance. Force your own hyacinths, or buy them and pot them with your amaryllis bulbs. 'Mont Blanc’ grows 30 to 36 inches tall, so be sure to add hoop stakes to a planter bowl like this.

‘Papillio Improved’ Amaryllis

Typically referred to as butterfly amaryllis, ‘Papillio Improved’ opens blossoms with narrow petals in shades of cream, burgundy and bronze. This is an evergreen amaryllis — it doesn’t need a period of dormancy but grows year-round indoors. Or grow it outdoors as a landscape plant in Zones 8-11. Stems soar 20 to 24 inches high.

‘Faro’ Amaryllis

Salmon-pink blooms with a white star open to a grandiose 9 inches across on ‘Faro’ amaryllis. For pots by windows, be sure to give plants a quarter turn weekly to help keep stems from stretching toward the sun. ‘Faro’ stems grow to 20 inches high and benefit from staking, especially once flower buds start popping.

‘Estella’ Amaryllis

Fill your home with shades of spring by growing a few pots of ‘Estella’ amaryllis. This perky bloomer opens flowers in bright hues of pink-purple with chartreuse throats. The color combination offers an antidote to winter doldrums and cold weather cabin fever. Flowers measure 5 to 6 inches across on stems 18 inches tall.

‘Athene’ White Amaryllis

Get creative with your amaryllis displays by tucking them into containers that support stems while showcasing the amazing bulb. A dusting of fake snow dresses this white ‘Athene’ amaryllis with a touch of wintertime magic. Once flowering finishes, snip bloom stems about an inch above the bulb. Transplant the bulb into a traditional pot with drainage if you plan to grow your amaryllis through summer and force it to bloom the following winter.

‘Double Dragon’ Amaryllis

‘Double Dragon’ amaryllis ignites winter rooms with its festive color scheme: deep red flowers against bright green leaves. Blooms open to 8 inches across. This popular variety is commonly sold and easy to find in holiday bulb displays.

‘Aphrodite’ Amaryllis

It’s not hard to see why ‘Aphrodite’ amaryllis is named after the Greek goddess for love and beauty. Fully double blooms unfurl in a blizzard of white petals edged with red kisses. This large flowered variety opens blossoms to 9 inches across.

‘Rilona’ Amaryllis

An heirloom variety, ‘Rilona’ delivers classic amaryllis beauty in unusual shades of apricot and salmon. Flowers open 7 to 8 inches across on stems 12 to 24 inches tall.

Rosario Amaryllis

With graceful, wispy petals, Rosario was developed from a Bolivian species group known as Cybister amaryllis. This is an evergreen amaryllis that can be grown year-round as a houseplant or outdoors as a landscape plant in Zones 8-11. Bulbs don’t need a period of dormancy to rebloom, but flower at will. Look for this amaryllis from specialty bulb growers.

'Samba' Amaryllis

‘Samba’ opens big, red, ruffled blooms with white markings and margins. It averages 20 inches tall.

'Apple Blossom' Amaryllis

The popular amaryllis ‘Apple Blossom’ features blooms that are a mix of candy pink and snowy white. The flowers have lime green throats.

'Red Lion' Amaryllis

Popular ‘Red Lion’ is a holiday classic, with velvety red blooms and white stamens.

'Ice Queen' Amaryllis

Unusual, spider-like white petals brushed with green distinguish ‘Ice Queen.'

'Summertime' Amaryllis

The 7-inch blooms on ‘Summertime’ range from watermelon pink to deep rose. They have greenish centers and cranberry red rays.

'Fairy Tale' Amaryllis

‘Fairy Tale’ holds its striped red and white blossoms on slender stems. The flowers are smaller than those of many amaryllis, but bulbs can produce 5 or 6 flowers per stem.

'Matterhorn' Amaryllis

Large, snow-white flowers with yellow-green throats make ‘Matterhorn’ a standout.

'Monaco' Amaryllis

Cherry red ‘Monaco’ has a white throat with a green center on each large bloom.
