A dramatic grade change on the site made the outdoor space non-functional and disjointed, prompting the need for more usable space. Using several terraced levels and a rooftop garden overlooking the ocean, the outdoor space was maximized for use as entertaining and relaxing nodes.

Entertaining Patio and Garden at Mod Beach House

The concept for this design was to connect the indoors with the outdoors. The terraced outdoor space includes two fire pits, geometric planters that add natural color, a bocce ball court and a sports court for playing tennis or basketball. A rooftop garden offers additional seating and an incredible ocean view.

Hard-lined geometric planters are softened with softly textured native grasses and vibrant succulent varieties that either drape over planter walls or act as sculptural pieces, which complement the architecture. The walls throughout the site not only aid in creating more usable space, but absorb the sun’s heat during the day and radiate it out in the cooler coastal evenings.
