The House

When Brittany Hayes first saw this 1905 Craftsman in Monroe, GA, it had no walls, no fixtures, no lighting and almost no floors — the previous owner had gutted it. Even so, she was smitten. “I could see character here and there, like some of the original pine floors and the super-tall ceilings,” she says. A blogger and designer, Brittany had been waiting for the opportunity to take on a big project, and to create a home that she and her girls, Addison, 11, and Winter, 7, could call their own. And here it was, charm in the rough. First came the heavy lifting: Drywall was installed, plumbing was added, the old floors were refinished. Then Brittany cracked open her Pinterest board to inspire a whimsical-meets-elegant blend of dramatic paints, fancy wallpapers and look-at-me furniture — plus touches that all have a little something special. “We call this house our historic wonderland,” says Brittany. “Every room is a place where you can kick your shoes off and get lost.”

The heart of this space: the swoon-worthy brick fireplace. “I treasured the few things that were still there after the gut job,” Brittany says. She put in rustic beams stained dark walnut and a roll arm sofa from RH to play up the vintage look. But it wouldn’t be a room in her house if it weren’t a little playful; enter a bubble gum pink velvet ottoman and a pair of bird-adorned upholstered armchairs, all from Anthropologie.

“I wanted a kitchen that felt sophisticated, to fit with the original look of the house,” says Brittany. A majestic powder-coated-wood range hood in black and gold by APF, Inc. became the centerpiece, contrasted with custom-color gray blue cabinets and luxe marble countertops. Gold-toned shelves echo the hood. “Even cooking spaghetti feels fancy in this kitchen,” says Brittany.

This room was already magical, with its 12-foot-tall ceilings and large windows. To make it all the more so for Addison and Winter, Brittany put in a pink velvet sectional from Jonathan Louis, pink-and-red-striped chairs, and a candlestick-inspired chandelier. Uno is even more fun played on one of the gold poufs, which are from HomeGoods. “They like to crank up Taylor Swift when their friends are over and have dance parties in here,” says Brittany. Pro tip: A mix of photos, travel finds and art makes a gallery wall, like the one in here, unique (this one has Addison and Winter originals).

The girls’ shared creative space is fairy-tale-like thanks to the ethereal mural wallpaper from Anthropologie. “They paint and color in here, but someday they’ll use it for homework,” says Brittany. “Either way, I wanted it to feel inspiring.” Punched brass pendants (also from Anthropologie) hang like flowers over pretty matching desks and chairs from Nadeau. A cart from World Market holds crayons, paper and other imagination enablers.

“I love the way a canopy bed wraps around you, like it’s your own little escape,” says Brittany. This weathered-wood one is from RH. She paired it with an equally awe-inspiring beaded chandelier from Regina Andrew. Rounding out the getaway vibes: a pair of light wood nightstands and a bright green love seat (from World Market). Addison's Bedroom

For a dreamy hideaway, Brittany got her oldest daughter a four-poster bed with delicate branches from Anthropologie, accented by a botanical duvet and a fluffy bench (found at HomeGoods). Above, birds soar through the clouds on wallpaper by Hygge & West. The portrait, a collaboration between Brittany and artist Mary-Catheryn, is meant to be a grown-up Addison.

Winter's Bedroom

It’s another wallpaper wonder! This design, also by Hygge & West, has drawings of swans, doves, deer and flowers. With crystal-beaded sphere lights from Capital Lighting and swirly rattan headboards from Serena & Lily, “It’s like a storybook come to life,” says Brittany. Color-block pillows and a shibori chair say tween, not twee.

Even this little spot feels like a fantasy world with luscious flowers (wallpaper by Stagg Design Shop), starbursts (tile from Cement Tile Shop), a lavender vanity, (custom-built by APF, Inc.).
