Waterside Retreats: Sophisticated Lake House in S.C.

This lake house by Abbi Williams offers plenty of visual interest with varied rooflines and an attractive stone construction. The staircase on the side was originally intended to come down from the back deck, but designers moved it to keep sightlines open out to the lake.

One of the primary goals in the design of this kitchen was to fill the space with sunlight. A huge arched window over the sink does the job beautifully. The window—along with the oversized light fixture—also balances out the height of the vaulted ceiling.

The big, beautiful arched window above the door to the deck matches the proportions of the kitchen window. It's a design move that brings continuity to the open concept living area.

Countryside Escapes: Rustic-Modern Log Cabin in Jackson Hole

At night, ample windows and carefully planned exterior lighting turn this mountain cabin into a warm, welcoming beacon for its owners and guests. The project, by Design Associates Architects, was a cabin retreat for the owners and their siblings and extended families in Jackson Hole. The owners wanted a log cabin but also wanted modern conveniences. The resulting design features a frame construction with log accents and siding, and the house is packed with space but has a cozy cabin feel.

Windows are strategically placed to allow the chef to enjoy the view while working at the cooking station or sink.

Color + Pattern: Pretty Pastels in Historic Home

There's a lot to love about this colorful living room designed by Bria Hammel Interiors: the pastel pink sofa, the coral chair, and, without doubt, the white-painted fireplace. A large rug softens the hardwood floors and brings in a dose of yellow and blue, too.
