Full House: A Favorite Room for Everyone

Mom, Dad, and all four daughters—and even the dog!—each have a favorite spot in this bright, airy Florida home. HGTV Magazine takes you on a tour.

Making a House a Home

When Stacey and Charlie Hogan bought their Cape Cod–style home in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, in 2012, it had a stuffy, formal feel, with heavy woodwork and closed-off rooms. "I wanted the house to reflect all of our styles but still look pulled together," says Stacey. So she called designer Andrew Howard, who not only reconfigured walls to open up the space but also managed to satisfy everyone’s taste as he decorated.

Something For Everyone

Stacey got a living room with fresh blues and whites; Charlie got a study that's masculine and sophisticated; and each of their four daughters got a colorful room that reflects her personality. It's a super-fun house to tour because you never know what you'll find behind each door. Have a look!

Living Room: Mom’s Favorite Room

"I’m always in here," says Stacey of her go-to room, with its tall windows and blue and white color scheme. The design started with the patterned curtains, which were hung three feet above the windows so they wouldn’t feel puny compared with the 20-foot ceiling.

Relaxing Living Room

The elm coffee table is surrounded with seating in all shades of blue, including a pair of animal-print chairs (for a similar fabric, try fabric.com). "In our old house we never used the formal living room," says Stacey. "I love having this great comfy space to hang out in instead."

Kitchen

Stacey loves the airy look of a white kitchen but wanted a twist, so the cabinets are painted light gray (Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore). The girls like perching on the two-seater benches from Lee Industries that scoot up to the 52-inch-by-127-inch island. The countertop is marble and Stacey’s fine with the wear and tear. "It has a few chips and some watermarks, but it’s still incredibly beautiful," she says.

Laundry Room: The Dog’s Favorite Room

"[With a big family,] the laundry never stops. So I had two sets of washers and dryers installed," says Stacey. With the stackable units, a laundry chute, and a deep Kohler sink, "I’m in heaven in this room!" she says. She’s not the only one: Sadie, the boxer, naps here on a dog bed from HomeGoods.

Breakfast Room

The kitchen’s banquette seats seven, "but we can squish in 12," says Stacey, who keeps extra serving pieces in the bench’s storage drawers. The family sometimes eats lunch and dinner here too. Andrew had window seat cushions made with a zigzag-print fabric (for a similar look, try spoonflower.com) and filled the rest of the bench with pillows in red, white, and blue.

Study: Dad’s Favorite Room

This clubby space—with a leather sofa from Hickory Chair and a walnut coffee table from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams—serves as both a den and a home office for Charlie, CEO of a national facilities management company. "It’s my hideaway," he says.

A Businessman’s Cave

The walls and built-in shelving are painted Chocolate Candy Brown by Benjamin Moore. "The rest of the house is bright and colorful, but I like a calmer space," says Charlie. "I wanted a study that’s a lot more subdued."

Entryway

The family’s foyer is functional, too. Stacey thought a bench would be more practical than a console, since this is where the family gathers before heading out. The wood floors throughout the house are reclaimed antique oak, and the jute runner is from HomeGoods.

Dining Room

The family reserves this room mostly for holidays and big occasions, so it’s dressed up with bright green trim (Woodland Hills Green by Benjamin Moore) on the ceiling and around the windows. The floor has a gradated green wool and linen rug. Stacey and Andrew chose upholstered chairs from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and woven wood chairs for around the trestle table. Two mirrors and an antique backgammon board take the place of art.

Claire's Favorite Room

"Cool and not frilly" were 13-year-old Claire’s requests for a bedroom. "She’s never been the flowery type," says Stacey. Claire says, "my mom wanted me to have a grown-up room, but I wanted a fun one. So we picked an awesome blue for the walls and a bed with a wild print." The walls are Un-teal We Meet Again by Benjamin Moore, and the stripy headboard fabric is from Romo.

Grace's Favorite Room

A competitive swimmer who’s often up at 4:30 a.m. for practice, Grace, 15, has a first-floor bedroom so she won’t wake her sisters. Since she loves orange and pink, they pop up all over the room, and a variety of shapes make the space even more fun. There’s a circle print on the rug and bedding, a diamond pattern on the curtains, and a flower-like mirror.

A Fun Girl's Room

"The big white light with all those little holes is amazing," says Grace. "It’s the thing I love most in my room." The ceiling light is from Oly Studio.

Kate's Favorite Room

Kate, 12, loves cheerleading—her peppy spirit inspired her fuchsia bedroom. At the end of the upholstered bed is a bench from Lee Industries. "She’s into fashion, and that’s where she lays out clothes and jewelry combos," Stacey says.

The Room's Focal Point

Covering one wall is Élitis wallpaper that Andrew had been saving for a year until he found the perfect place for it. "My wallpaper looks like tie-dye," says Kate. "My friends all think it’s so cool!"

Emily's Favorite Room

A super-serious student, 17-year-old Emily also has the most classic taste of all the girls. Navy is her favorite color-, but since four dark blue walls can make a room look heavy, she decided on teal instead (Sea Mist Green by Benjamin Moore) with navy accents.

Personalized Teen's Room

The dimpled ceramic lamps are from Arteriors Home. The art pieces above the bed, known as sailors’ valentines, are made of seashells glued in a pattern in a frame. "I saw the fabric (from Quadrille) for my headboard on Pinterest and fell in love with it," says Emily. "I was so excited when we found it."
