What started as Erica Feldmann's bewitching blog turned quickly into an enchanting brick-and-mortar filled with magical, metaphysical wares at HausWitch Home + Healing. “I’m a Scorpio rising. So I pretty much came out of the womb into witchcraft,” Erica says. “In my family, we were really able to just kind of explore our spiritualities. And when The Craft came out when I was 14, and I saw it on opening night, I was like, ‘Yeah. That is for me.’” After completing a study abroad program at Cambridge University called Witchcraft in Early Modern History, the passionate feminist moved to Salem as a fully evolved witch, ready to share her craft and sense of magic with the world.

"I have always been interested in interiors, just as a sensitive person," Erica explains. "It was a way for me to control my environment and help with my anxiety. And so, alongside my interest in witchcraft, my interest in interiors kind of grew. And that's how HausWitch started."

"I started making spell kits so that I could give the experience of having me come over to your house. And those resonated really well," she says. As interest and popularity with the blog and products grew, Erica was able to open the brick-and-mortar store about seven months later in 2015. Opening a physical store allowed her to make space for more community witchcraft, like DIY hauscraft workshops, in-person artist demos and monthly Witch School memberships called Secret Circle.

In addition to the spell kits and sorted crystals for all sorts of healing, Erica also partners with local artist friends to promote their magic. "We also have all of our candles that we mix and make with our friend Katie, who owns a candle company called Soy Much Brighter," Erica adds.

Once inside the Salem store, customers will note the wow-worthy design of the enchanting space, from tables lined with mugs and journals to thriving, spreading houseplants. "All of the furniture in the store is either vintage or secondhand," Erica says.

Erica describes the store as a place for intentional magic and patriarchy-hexing goods, with one personal favorite. "On this table, you can see some of our exclusive products and best sellers, including my book, “HausMagick: Transform Your Home with Witchcraft.”

Perfectly displayed between rows of colorful books and framed icons, "We have our golden amethyst geode [we call] Hestia," says Erica. "Hestia was the goddess of the hearth and home, and she is our patron goddess here at the store."

"Over here we have our hutch, Dolly," Erica says with a smile. "We named her that because she is top heavy and works hard. And I actually painted this myself. It started out as a mostly white hutch with doors and black trim, and I took it all off and painted it black and then did this rainbow ombre."

"For the longest time, we did not have a sales counter," Erica recalls. "We just had a tabletop on sawhorses. So we decided to upgrade a few years ago."

"Here at HausWitch, we make our own line of intentional cleaning products called Counter-Magick — and they’re meant to bring a little ritual into your routine," Erica says. "So they are functional cleaning products as well as energetic cleaning products."

"We’re going to make a little bit of glass cleaner for protection, which is called Gaze," Erica says. The essential oil and plant-based spray is a concentrated blend of water, vodka and safe synthetic fragrance. "This is good for all of your windows, mirrors and screens, and it smells amazing, like clary sage and lime, and it has essences of yarrow, which is a very protective herb. And then, the essence of obsidian, [a] super grounding and super protective stone."

For good energy, hexafoil is displayed in the store window. "This is a shape that different cultures have sort of carved into their doorways and their buildings for hundreds of years as a protective symbol," Erica explains.

"Spray [Gaze] on your windows, and then wipe it off in the shape of a daisy wheel," Erica instructs. "When you do that, it forms a seal of protection for your windows, mirrors and screens."

Cue Melissa Neirman, Erica's wife and a trained clairvoyant, queer mystic and founder of NowAge Travel, who also operates Personal Rainbow Aura Photography out of HausWitch Home + Healing. "I'm actually from Massachusetts," Erica says. "And I never thought I would move back here — that was actually like being kind of drawn back by love and magic, I think."

"As far as our home, everything is very intentional," Erica says. "Using vintage and secondhand furniture is definitely part of my witchcraft practice, which is to do no harm to the earth as much as possible." The velvet green sofa is not only trendy but seems to be a most popular spot.

"This is a pull-out sofa," Melissa adds. "And we've had some very powerful witches on the sleeper sofa. So it's charged."

Displayed in a frame on the mantel is a 1925 newspaper clipping from the building in which they live. "This building is really interesting," Melissa says. "Originally, it was built as Salem's first theater, and the people of Salem, who were kind of the descendants of Puritans, were not thrilled to have a theater."

"That’s when we learned about Elizabeth Inchbald," Erica adds. "[She was] an out lesbian writing a gender satire, and [it was] the first play put on here." Today, the beautiful brick building serves as condos with a charming past.

"We love our cheetah chair," Erica says. "We love it so much, we have two."

"We have a lot of big cat energy in the house," Melissa adds. "And I just like furniture you can pet."

Melissa and Erica's aptly named cat Salem stretches out across the living room desk beneath a print that looks like a perfect match.

The couple's upstairs bedroom is filled with sunlight from the triangle window, providing a perfect spot for the duo's other ancient "hauscat" to lounge. "Cinnamon Roll is 17 years old," Erica says. "He's been with me since I was 23, and we think that he might be a 500-year-old magician in a cat's body."

"Right over our bed, this beautiful macrame piece was made by a friend of mine, Marissa Curran, for our wedding," Erica says. "We stood in front of that during our wedding ceremony, and we love having it over the bed — a very magically charged object, I would say."

Among the living cats roaming the home's passages, these two black cat statues also have monikers: Heidi and Helga. "It's a good magical practice [for couples] to have pairs of things [in their design]," Erica says. "And so we definitely have a lot of pairs of cats."

"This is our love altar," Erica says. Among the photos, pins and cards collected over the years that are displayed in a box, the two also gift to the altar meaningful geodes and have a framed aura photo from their wedding night.

"These are built-in bookcases that came with the joint," Erica says. "This is a really sentimental shelf for me with pictures of my family and my ancestors."
