All The Creative Ways You Can Use Cane Accessories In Your Home

I’m just going to say it: Light and airy cane is the new "It Girl" of home decorating. Back with flair from the '80s and '90s, it’s popping up everywhere. And we’re not just talking furniture, but cane accessories, too. So, if you’re in love like we are, keep scrolling because we’ve got some simple ways you can use this warm, textured material in your own space. If you’re not quite there yet, keep scrolling anyway; we’ll convince you with these gorgeous designs.

For Cynthia Moreno, the West Hollywood-based creative behind Hot Pink Pineapples, cane means warmth and texture without bulk or heaviness. “The natural fibers really pop with light colors, specifically pastels,” Cyn tells HGTV.com. A trip to Byron Bay, Australia last year inspired her blush dining room, which plays host to Joybird’s Florence Sideboard. “[Natural fibers against neutral colors] creates this modern island vibe that’s light, subtle and clean," she says.

West Hollywood-based designer Joe Lucas layered a variety of natural textures and materials into his 2020 Palm Beach Kips Bay Showhouse patio. With a stone dining table by Serena and Lily, cane tableware (peep that pitcher!) and green rattan chairs (“I spotted the green chairs from about 100 yards away at a fair in the south of France and made a beeline for them,” says Joe), this space is total vacation vibes.

Clean and crisp is what home enthusiast Jenna McAvoy keeps in mind while decorating her airy apartment in Philadelphia. Her bedroom, which boasts shades of white and beige, is the perfect neutral backdrop for Zin Home’s Sydney Woven cane bed. “Cane brings an earthy, natural texture into my otherwise minimal space,” says Jenna. She paired her cane statement piece with Pottery Barn’s creamy Alden nightstand, sparkling white bedding and a vase full of super-trendy pampas grass.

Styling a stunning piece of cane furniture is when it gets really fun — and there’s so many possibilities with a piece like Anthropologie’s Wallace Cane and Oak sideboard. Sideboards can double as a media console or entryway storage depending on what your space needs. Tom Magill and Maddie Bender from Anthropologie’s Brand Styling team suggest first anchoring the sideboard with a large-scale mirror or artwork. “For the surface, bring in a pop of color with a vase of fresh flowers and stack your favorite coffee table books to add height under a table lamp or decorative object,” he adds. “Don’t forget to personalize with a framed family photo or a sculptural souvenir from your travels.”

Cane is a staple in blogger Amy Ming’s Evansville, Indiana home. Particularly in her dining room, where cane-back chairs add a touch of elegance to the French country space. Brass accents, a crystal chandelier from Facebook Marketplace and a confit pot filled with neutral roses complete the look. We could hang out in this room all day!

Cane-back stools pop against a deep blue kitchen island (and complement the wooden floors!) in this space designed by Mary Patton of Mary Patton Design. “Rather than doing an upholstered bar stool, these are very easy to clean and comfortable,” Mary tells HGTV.com.

Here, Mary used a mix of wood tones and textures to create a light bohemian vibe. An upholstered rattan chair may steal the show in this trendy dining room, but timeless cane adds a layered element to the space. “Cane furniture is lightweight and durable,” says Mary. “It’s something that looks good whether it’s vintage or brand new!”

One of the best things about cane is its history. It’s been around forever (I even spotted a couple cane-back chairs in season two of The Crown on Netflix). So, it’s safe to say there’s tons of vintage cane pieces floating around. HGTV.com Managing Editor, Camille Smith, found this midcentury chair at an estate sale.

“I was undecided about the chair because the seat was stained, but the cane was in perfect condition,” says Camille. The dealer ended up giving it to her for free! After a crazy amount of cleaning, she put it in her guest bedroom and topped it off with a charming herringbone throw. Voila. Camille’s vintage to chic chair transformation? Priceless — and so cute.

CB2’s Boho Natural Cane Daybed is a light and airy place to relax — we could curl up on those colorful bohemian throw pillows all day long! Andrea Erman, Divisional Merchandise Manager at CB2 says, “While [cane’s] clean, geometric weave is modern when paired with more simple silhouettes, it also allows us to nod to tradition."

Mallory Fletchall of Reserve Home painted her bedroom wall Modern Love by Backdrop — a fitting canvas for her totally modern and super lovable space. Her nightstand and headboard, earthy pieces from the Urban Outfitters Marte collection, ground an array of organic accessories. “I love the warmth and texture [the headboard and nightstand] bring into our bedroom,” Mallory tells HGTV.com. “When paired with the soft pink color on the walls and with our décor — especially the Tamar Mogendorff — shell pillows, they really shine.”

HGTV’s Leanne Ford is the queen of cool, and her new furniture collection with Crate and Barrel includes lots of cane — cabinets and chairs alike! If you’re wondering how to incorporate these pieces into your own space, Sebastian Brauer, Vice President of Product Design and Development at Crate and Barrel, has some advice: “What I personally love about cane is that it adds warmth, texture and interest to any interior style — traditional to modern, coastal to prairie.”

Warm textural cane on Erin Wheeler’s Modish Kalalou cabinet, plus the dark moody blue on her office walls, equals: “A match made in heaven!” The author of Sunny Circle Studio polished off the look with a chic terrazzo lamp and sheer, creamy curtains.

Using stand-alone cane statement pieces, like Anthropologie’s Wallace Cane and Oak Armoire, to clear up clutter is a win-win. A cool cane armoire to keep all your clothes organized? Check!

Yes, you can even use cane in the bathroom. The Pure Salt Interiors team did in this Costa Mesa, California project. An oak vanity pops against sparkling white walls, while cane detailing on the cabinet’s face gives added flair. “We love getting playful with materials to bring more interest to a room, especially in small spaces like this bathroom,” says Aly Morford and Leigh Lincoln, co-founders of Pure Salt.
