28 Ways to Make Your Bedroom Look Like a Luxury Hotel Room

There are few things in life that feel quite as indulgent as staying at a luxe boutique hotel. Somehow those hotel beds always manage to feel like a fluffy cloud and the sheets feel as soft as spun silk. And don't even get us started on the bathrobes. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars or hop on a plane to experience the magic of your favorite hotel room. There are some simple things you can do to recreate the same luxurious vibe in your own bedroom.

Channel the vibe of a modern bed & breakfast with sophisticated, no-frills drapery used in an unpredictable way. Install curtain rods onto the ceiling to create a soft wall of fabric around the bed, which adds height and intimacy, says Alice Cramer, an Atlanta interior designer.

The easiest way to snazz up your bedroom is to outfit your bed with a gorgeous set of sheets. To keep the hotel room look, go for a crisp, white set of sheets that are at least 300 thread count. Hotel rooms tend to use sateen or percale sheets, but you should choose the material that feels most comfortable to you. If you want to splurge, you can have your sheets professionally laundered, so they come home nice and pressed. And if you find a brand of linens that you truly love, consider purchasing two or three sets so you always have them on hand.

Install a sleek sconce on the side of the bed, instead of cramming a lamp onto a small side table, says Ili Hidalgo-Nilsson, architect and designer with Terracotta Design Build in Atlanta. Sconces may feature swing arms or other ways to change the direction of the light, which helps create a comfortable environment for nighttime reading. A wire basket below a bedside table provides additional, yet stylish, storage.

The perfect soft, fluffy rug might even make you forget that you don't yet have the sheets you've been coveting or the perfect lighting setup. If you find a small rug that you love, like sheepskin, you could buy a few and place them around each of the three sides of your bed. Remember that you will usually be standing on this rug with bare feet, so the softer (and the fluffier!), the better.

A wallpaper accent wall brings elegance into this bedroom. Atlanta designers Cate Dunning and Lathem Gordon suggest layering a duvet and coverlet for a more luxurious look. Having one “boom-pow” statement pillow can make a big style difference, too.

If you have a built-in niche or desk, or even a simple bookshelf, you can replicate this look from Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va. Tuck a low-profile chair, which you can find by shopping vintage or repurposing stores in person or online, under the desk. Then, create a timeless display on the shelves or desktop. Chinoiserie is all the rage right now and doesn’t have to be a splurge, because replicas are available at discount home goods stores or sites such as eBay, says Michiel Perry, founder of Black Southern Belle. 

Dress up four poster beds with bed curtains and tassels, suggests Susan Sully, author of Past Present: Living with Heirlooms and Antiques. “I thought this idea of putting a framed print on top of the curtains was really elegant,” Sully says. She suggests keeping all the decor in one color tone, but varying the patterns. 

When including a work space in your bedroom, forget the basic boring desk that’s often part of a hotel suite. This glass-topped desk was an outlet find by Atlanta designer Michelle Mentzer, who paired it with an acrylic Z-shaped accent table from an antiques store. She also saved on the metallic lamp, mirror and glitzy accessories at a home decor discount store.

To create an architectural element worthy of a luxury hotel, Atlanta designer Rachel Greathouse started with a $30 mirror at a flea market. She painted the four-paned frame in a gloss that matched the wall color, and then hung the mirror at a 45 degree angle for an interesting visual effect. From its place above the bed, the mirror has the appearance of a diamond-shaped window because it reflects the windows on the opposite wall.

Metallic finishes and artwork can transform a bedroom from blah to breathtaking, recreating the mood of a boutique hotel. Atlanta designer Michelle Mentzer used framed landscapes, a gold-framed geometric mirror from a home decor discount store, a ceramic stool and a chest with mirrored drawers to reflect the look of today’s luxury hotels in this bedroom. 

Take a cue from West Elm, the modern furniture and home decor retailer, which plans to open its own brand of hotels, West Elm Hotels. Its guest room design has elements you could bring into your home, including globe pendants hung in pairs and a tufted headboard.

Capture the quaint charm of a high-end historical property with your bedding. “Use strong quilts with interesting patterns and colors that relate,” says author Susan Sully. “I love that she hung it over the headboard of the canopy.” A slightly battered chest at the foot of the bed, which could be found at a thrift or antiques store, adds charm.

Adding a bench to the foot of your bed will make an ordinary room seem like a ritzy hotel suite. Plus even your shoes and coffee table books will look more glamorous next to a bench with mirrored or acrylic legs, like this padded bench selected by Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily.

Mirrors and mirrored furniture are high-impact ways to get a luxury look, even on a budget. You can simply add a mirror, such as this round fish-eye mirror above the bed, which Atlanta designer Michelle Mentzer found at a discount. Or go glam by switching out a basic bedside table for a mirrored nightstand. If you have hardwood floors, add a patterned rug from an outlet store.
