Last night's season two premiere of Ellen's Design Challenge was all about beds. Why? Well, Ellen's bedroom looked like this:

Okay, just kidding. But, as anyone who's ever slept with their matress on the floor while searching for the perfect bed knows (guilty,) this oh-so-important piece is hard to get right. After all, it's the centerpiece of the bedroom, and you probably spend about a third of your life sleeping there. So, it has to have just the right mix of style and function. That's why Ellen challenged this season's eight designer hopefuls to create a signature bed, alongside their trusty carpenters, of course.

Here at HGTV.com, we're all about making our own DIY headboards, but these professional designers took the entire bed to a whole new level. Inspired by the Los Angeles skyline, Alexis created a matte black oxidized wood frame with a landscape-inspired gold leaf detail.

Bradley went for Japanese inspiration, creating a seemingly simple slat design that includes an upholstered headboard.

Kyle was inspired by the beaches of Lake Michigan. He added a carved detail on the wooden side of the bed (meant to emulate footprints in the sand dunes) and a wave-like accent on the blue headboard, inspired by a topigraphical map.

McKenzie has a thing for lotus flowers, so that was the jumping-off-point for this design, which features "petals" of carved and painted wood.

Melissa's inspiration was a fluffy, floating cloud, so she created a bubbly bed frame upholstered with bright white leather.

Inspired by geometric shapes, Sef created an angular headboard from triangles of metal. He applied trianges of wood veneer for contrast at the base of the headboard.
