How to Enjoy Valentine's Day When You're Single

Try these 13 ideas for spending the day alone (or with friends).

Being single in February kinda sucks. It's dreary and cold and, oh yeah, there's that romantic holiday you won't be celebrating.

Remember this, though — Valentine's Day falls on a Tuesday. Therefore, it's highly unlikely that your coupled friends will do something grand and extravagant on a weeknight. Secondly, be happy that you don't have to spend money and think of a cute, creative gift idea.

Instead, make the 14th a positive experience this year by taking care of Number One.

Make a date with your friends...

There's no better way to spend Valentine's Day as a single person than with people who are unattached, like you. Meet up with friends or family for a movie, meal or drinks. Host a game or movie night at home. Go shopping or do a group activity outside.

Or with the couch.

Hey, sometimes you just need some "me time," ya know? Enjoy this opportunity to catch up on hot TV shows, flip through magazines or read a book.

Cook a nice meal for yourself...

This pumpkin fettuccine with sausage and sage is so satisfying. The layers of flavors beg you to put on a thick sweater and curl up on the sofa with a steamy bowl.

When was the last time you prepared a well-balanced, nutritious meal for yourself? In the spirit of self-care, spend time making dinner from scratch, not a box.

Or order take-out.

Make this day about doing things you love. So, if cooking ain't your thing, then skip it. Splurge on a nice wine or beer instead.

This is a great way to meet new people or catch up with friends. The relaxed atmosphere makes it enjoyable and beginner-friendly. Pottery, glass-blowing or cooking classes also offer opportunities to learn a new hobby and provide fun environments for groups or singles.

Or color at home.

There are multitudes of adult coloring books out there. Pick whichever one peaks your interest and get lost coloring inside (or outside) the lines. Seriously, there are so many options, from Game of Thrones to Vogue-themed. This one from Anthropologie is beautiful, and the pages would look great in a frame when you're done.

Book a massage or nail appointment...

It's the perfect way to unwind after work and give yourself the gift of relaxation. Indulge in an hour-long massage or facial. Meet your girlfriends at the nail spa for wine and pedicures. Get a blow out at a dry bar, just because.

Or have a DIY spa night.

Light the candles; run a hot bath; put on a face mask; pick your favorite nail color and relaaaaax. Make a homemade face mask or body scrub. Try that hair mask you always read about but never have time to do. Create your own essential oil blend for a natural moisturizer.

Go to a local coffee shop.

When you're feeling lonely, it's nice to be around other people, even if you don't know them. Coffee shops are great for singles who want to mingle or singles who just want to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and artisan coffee.

To highlight the color in the space, designers used a neutral color palette to anchor the space and help reflect the natural light from the windows. Mirrors were then added to reflect the color and light, making the space look brighter.

Because you never leave a workout feeling worse than before. Choose any type of physical activity, inside or out, to feel confident, relaxed and full of positivity from all those endorphins.

Or try one at home.

Exercising at home allows you move at your own pace, taking off the pressure of working out in front of a group. Some cable providers offer a variety of exercise classes to rent or watch for free. But YouTube is really your best bet for free, engaging classes with personable instructors. I recommend Casey Ho of Blogilates, PopSugar Fitness and Brett Larkin Yoga.

Buy something frivolous.
