Glamorous Bedroom Suite Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1410 -- More Projects »
Alison Epstein moved into her townhouse a little over six months ago, and her home, especially the bedroom, is still a little bare. She works in fashion and would love to see her bedroom reflect her style and love of glamour. Designer Kristan Cunningham, along with design coordinators Dave Sheinkopf and Spencer Anderson, turns this barren space into a luxurious fashion runway, all for less than $1,000.
The Dilemma Alison loves the color purple. Unfortunately, after three attempts, she hasn't been able to get the shade right on her bedroom walls. She wants a soft and glamorous look for the room, but right now it's just empty. She is storing clothes on the floor, and she doesn't even have nightstands to hold her alarm clock. The Solution Designer Kristan Cunningham devises a plan that will give this modern girl the glamour she's been craving. A softer color for the walls will set a sophisticated tone in the space. A dramatic bed will be the focal point in the space. The team will give Alison a sitting area and a spot to store her clothes. New window treatments will soften the existing shutters. Here's how her plan comes together.
A dusty lavender hue sets the stage for the sophisticated look.An eye-catching floor-to-ceiling headboard (figure A) creates a dramatic focal point in the room. The padded and button-tufted fabric panel is framed in six-inch-wide molding and painted a creamy tone for a glamorous finish. Luxurious linens complete the look.
Opposite the bed, a mirrored panel (figure B) provides a spot for dressing. The panel is created by adhering individual square mirrors to a piece of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) board. The mirrored board is then framed in the same six-inch-wide molding used on the headboard. A feminine, shell-themed chandelier (figure C) and contemporary floor lamps add more style and ambiance.
Design coordinator Dave Sheinkopf adds architectural detail (figure D) to the space by creating a framing effect on either side of the headboard and again on the opposite wall. He attaches molding to the wall, creating a vertical hexagon. He creates a mat effect within the frame, resulting in a lavender band that gives the panels further impact.
Spencer gives a pair of simple contemporary nightstands (figure E) a sophisticated makeover by adding mirrored acrylic to the drawer fronts.
Design coordinator Spencer Anderson adds decorative framing to the front of a basic dresser (figure F) so Alison can get her clothes off the floor. New brushed-nickel knobs give the piece just the right touch of chic sophistication.
A simple chair (figure G) offers a cozy spot to relax for a moment. New curtains (figure H) soften the existing window shutters to complete the look.
