A Bit of Beach

This year’s HGTV Dream Home uses coastal style as its inspiration thanks to its location on Puget Sound—which also happens to be the spectacular view from the kitchen. Sun-bleached colors, painted beadboard ceilings, natural wood finishes, and a breezy marble-look wall set a waterfront mood.

A Finish with Function

In this side storage area, designer Brian Patrick Flynn wanted to add as much function as possible—even in the two-foot-by-two-foot space between the cabinet and the countertop. A chalkboard wall message center fit the bill perfectly. “We wanted to make sure we had elements that were playful but also practical,” Brian says.

Fabulous Flooring

Whitewashed wood floors mimic the look of sand underfoot. The floors, which reflect the abundant natural light in the room and keep the space feeling bright, are a great example of how you can use modern, minimalist finishes in an overall scheme that still feels traditional.

Relaxed Vibe

The light fixtures in the kitchen offer a modern, beachy twist on traditional pendants. Using white lighting against white beadboard ceilings and white walls gives the room a streamlined appeal—but the metal-and-rattan combo keeps the look casual and inviting.

The Natural Look

To warm up a minimalist look and keep it grounded, just add a touch of nature—or a little whimsy. Here, you have both. The gorgeous matte black hardware in the kitchen, which is designed to look like twigs, is all custom-made.

Mimicking Marble

To create as sleek and contemporary a look as possible in the kitchen, Brian chose not to put in upper cabinets or a separate backsplash. Instead, he covered the entire wall behind the stove with a marble-look engineered stone veneer. (You’d never guess the wall isn’t real Carrara marble.) Using this material across such a wide, uninterrupted space lets the beauty of the veining shine through. And there’s a bonus: engineered stone is much less susceptible to staining than natural stone, making it a great choice for potentially messy spots like this one.

Low Profile

This range and hood make a big style statement with a small footprint. The simple, clean silhouette and stainless steel finish are the perfect complement to this all-white traditional kitchen, giving it a high-end feel without veering too far toward industrial.

Bright and Beautiful

The coastal theme continues in the terrace bath, where a combination of luxe neutral finishes fuses modern and traditional beautifully. Brian chose a pure white color scheme throughout the room, accented very lightly with touches of pink and sea green. “The reason to go with white is that there’s very little natural light in this room, except for a small window in the shower,” he says. “We wanted to make it light and bright and happy.”

Textural Touches

When you’re going with an all-white room, adding texture is essential. Brian covered this accent wall in a veneer that looks like stacked white stones, and he chose a mirror surrounded by a weathered woven frame.

A Look That Pops

The black matte look continues into the shower, where the hardware really catches your eye against the gleaming white beveled subway tile. To keep the look streamlined, the jets are designed to stay flat when not in use and pop out only when the sprays are activated.

Gorgeous from Every Angle

Because the architecture of the home created lots of wall and ceiling angles in the master bath, Brian chose a bright-white look to keep the room from being too dark or busy. “The walls, the ceiling, even the tile, they’re just all different shades of ultra-white, which really help bounce light around the room,” he says. The space is grounded by decorative items that are rustic, slightly masculine, and inspired by the Pacific Northwest location.

Ahoy!

The nautical theme is set: the soaking tub is flanked by century-old wood pillars reclaimed from a dock in a nearby town, and overhead hangs what may be the most awesome light fixture ever: a rope-and-iron chandelier. Adding Dimension

The master bath is completely outfitted in the matte black Trinsic® line from Delta® Faucet, including this towel hook and slim wall-mounted pair of faucets. The dimensional tile above the vanity is a geometric pattern inspired by the 1970s, the decade this HGTV Dream Home was originally built. “The grout is the same bright-white color so it just fades away,” Brian says. “This is the coolest tile in the entire house.”
