Gorgeous Gardens: Japanese-Inspired Zen Retreat

Located in the historic “Professorville” district of Palo Alto, Calif., this brick bungalow sits on a lot of less than ¼-acres. Subsequently, the Zeterre Landscape Architecture team needed to carve out a garden retreat that complemented the home, preserved its native plants and exuded the Japanese style the owners so desired.

A wall of Devonshire limestone encloses the garden, emulating the shape of a traditional Tansu chest. The treasure within is just as extraordinary, with sculpted pine trees, rare Japanese Maples and a hedge of weeping cherries enlivening the landscape.

A small courtyard separates the driveway from the garden, with a circular entry that exudes serenity. Stone paths guide visitors around various trees and plants, with rocks along the way for sitting and reflecting.

Even the fencing is extraordinary -- all Brazilian handcrafted hardwood with bronze detailing. No matter which side of the garden they stand on, guests will enjoy views of the wood, stone paths and ornamental grasses.

On the far side of the yard, a length of hedges offers a degree of privacy from the neighbors. Their full foliage makes a cool visual contrast to the smooth stone paths as well.
