Make a Hanging Himmeli Centerpiece

These Finnish decorations are traditionally made of straw, but using plastic straws and colorful yarn make these geometric shapes durable and simple to make. Make a grouping of himmeli to form a cool, structural hanging centerpiece.

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut Straws

Using the ruler, cut each straw into two four-inch lengths. (You'll need 12 pieces for each himmeli ornament.)

Step 2: Cut String

Cut a length of yarn about three feet long. Tie the end of the yarn to the crochet needle.

Step 3: Add First Three Straw Pieces

String the first three straw pieces onto the crochet needle. Form the straws into a triangle, then loop the string around in a loose knot. (You want to leave just a little give to allow the ornament to take shape.)

Step 4: Continue Ornament Assembly

Add two more straw pieces, tying off at the tip of the triangle. Add more straw pieces until you have five triangles total.

Step 5: Add Final Straw Piece

Add the final straw. Pull it towards your very first knot to create the top half of the diamond shape. Tie a knot to secure. Trim the ends of the knot.

Step 6: Finish Your Ornament

Using a second length of string, tie the two side triangles together underneath to finish the diamond shape.

Display + Make More
