White Is Timeless

White is the perfect background color for almost any other color, says designer Jim Sandell. White is also easier to keep clean because dirt is more visible than with other colors.

Why White?

The turn to white kitchens came during the Victorian period, when homeowners began to spend more time in the kitchen. The materials available at the time also lent themselves to white, such as the porcelain for tiles and sinks, and milk-based paints for cabinetry.

A Good Choice for Small Kitchens

White works well for small kitchens because it is light and bright, which makes the space appear larger.

Get the Light Right

Good lighting helps give definition and character to a white kitchen, since white is so reflective. The room can seem warm or cold, depending on the light source (natural or man-made).

Available in a variety of styles, from strikingly modern to authentically antique, white kitchen cabinets have always been a popular choice because they lend a soothing air to a room that often welcomes the day. Another advantage of white kitchen cabinets is that they can help to make kitchens—in many cases small, efficient spaces—feel more expansive.

If your goal is to create a white kitchen, these cabinets also offer opportunities for contrasts and splashes of color throughout the rest of the kitchen. For example, paired with dark gray or even black countertops or floors, white kitchen cabinets can help create a stylish visual contrast. They also provide the perfect canvas for interesting hardware—dark brown, black or gray metal knobs, pulls and door handles provide a striking visual on white kitchen cabinets.

Finally, if white kitchen cabinets are in your plans, don't be afraid to add flourishes of color to the rest of your kitchen. Consider colorful small appliances, like toasters or mixers, to add some personality to a kitchen design featuring white kitchen cabinets. Open or glass-front cabinets can also display colorful tableware for a lively pop of color in a bright, white kitchen.
