10 Scenic Vacation Home Rentals That Are Wheelchair-Accessible + Perfect for Your Next Family Getaway
We scoured Airbnb and Vrbo for some of the prettiest vacation rentals suitable for the whole family.
If you or someone you're traveling with uses a wheelchair, it can be challenging to find information about whether your destination is suitable for your needs. We scoured Airbnb and Vrbo — and asked the vacation experts there for their favorite suggestions — to find these stunning homes that were all built with wheelchair access in mind.
Unless we've noted otherwise, these homes are all fully accessible to wheelchairs, meaning even the second floor — or third, or fourth, in some cases — isn't out of reach. Many of these homes were intentionally designed to cater to people who use wheelchairs, and you can tell from the listings that the hosts have put a lot of thought and care into making welcoming spaces for people with all abilities. And as an extra bonus, nearly all of these have gorgeous views right from the windows, too.
This delightful studio is hidden in the forest of Putney, Vt., just a few minutes from wooded trails and a dairy farm nearby where you can buy fresh cheese. This cabin is a great place to stay if you like watching for wildlife from the windows — the host writes that they often see fox, deer, a variety of birds and even the occasional bear roaming the property.
New Mexico is wildly underrated, and Las Cruces is no exception. From this wheelchair-accessible casita with a roll-in shower, you'll see unpolluted night skies and vivid sunrises and sunsets over the Organ Mountains.
This gorgeous casita is also near the Organ Mountains, with plenty of desert flora on property. The roll-in shower and toilet both have assist bars.
This cottage is fully wheelchair-accessible and moments away from the beaches of Hatteras Island. If you're a Nicholas Sparks fan and Rodanthe sounds familiar to you, you're in luck — the Serendipity house from the movie Nights in Rodanthe is right across the street from this rental.
This stunning home in Portland, Ore., has received an award from the American Institute of Architects, and it’s easy to see why. Natural light floods this home’s minimalist design, and it’s located in a tree-lined neighborhood just 20 minutes from downtown. The bathroom is fully wheelchair-accessible, and the bedroom features an accessible-height bed, too.
This Floridian villa is near Orlando's attractions but is its own self-contained oasis. The home has multiple wheelchair-accessible showers — and luxurious ones, at that — and also has a hoist to help people into the pool (you'll need to bring your own sling). There are four bedrooms with room for seven people and a game room.
This home by Carolina Beach has an elevator and fully accessible bathroom with a wheel-under vanity. One guest wrote that her mother, who uses an electric wheelchair, rated the accessibility of this home as “better than any hotel.” You can hear the waves crashing from the balcony and the beach is just a few minutes’ stroll away. The local fire department, just a couple of blocks away, offers beach-friendly wheelchair rentals for free.
The first-floor main bedroom of this 1830s farmhouse is fully wheelchair-accessible, and there’s plenty of space in the kitchen and dining areas to navigate easily. Additional bedrooms on the second floor are not reachable without climbing stairs, but there is additional gathering space in the wheelchair-friendly screened-in porch.
With space to sleep 12 people, this large home is right on the Delaware River and fully wheelchair-accessible. An elevator reaches all four floors of the home, and one of the bathrooms and the deck overlooking the river are suitable for wheelchairs as well. The owner, Joan, says previous guests have rented Hoyer lifts and had them delivered to the house to help family members into and out of bed and is extremely responsive and happy to answer any questions about the property. She has a similar house a mile up the road, so if you're planning a large family event far enough in advance, you may be able to rent both so everyone can stay close by.
This massive home right on the coast of Alabama has space for everyone — its eight bedrooms fit 20 people, so it'd be perfect for a family reunion or multi-family getaway. An elevator reaches all four floors of the home. One of the bedrooms has a wheelchair-accessible private bathroom with a no-threshold shower.
