Outdoor Living
“We have a very large back patio, and we have a seating area there and a large dining area with an umbrella,” says HGTV Dream Home 2015 designer Linda Woodrum. “It’s just a very peaceful, private outside space that’s comfortable, inviting and another place to live.”
Comfy Outdoor Seating
This spacious outdoor retreat offers a spot for dining and a comfortable place to sit and relax, taking in the stunning landscaping and gorgeous Cape Cod views. Plenty of seating makes this the perfect spot for entertaining.
Crisp Color Choice
“We used the white cushions with the dark gray pillows – each contrasting well – and I love the look,” says Linda of the crisp, clean color choice used for the outdoor furniture.
Textured Look
Cedar shake shingles give the home’s exterior a charming, weathered appeal that reflects the relaxed sensibility of the surrounding island.
Picnic in the Shade
The patio table is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal al fresco. “It looks great and functions well,” says Linda. “There’s seating for eight, and we have a great big rectangular umbrella.”
A Natural Flow
The back patio is just off the kitchen, making it easy to prepare meals indoors and transfer everything to the table outside.
Expanded Entertainment
Since the back patio is so spacious, doors to both the dining room and great room are just a few steps away. In good weather, doors can be left open to expand the entertainment area.
Understated Accessories
To keep the focus on the beautiful scenery, the outdoor furniture and decor were designed to be simple and elegant, using neutral colors and just the right amount of accessories.
Party Central
Perfect for entertaining, a portable Wi-Fi music system that allows you to access online music services or listen to music from your own library is the ideal addition to an outdoor party.
Neutral and Natural
The teak furniture and white cushions echo the home’s neutral coloring, serving as a complimentary extension to the Cape Cod abode.
Stone Tile Flooring
Large stone tiles give the back patio a classic look that easily hides dirt and makes cleaning a breeze.
Night Light
Traditional sconces placed between each doorway light up the space for evening get-togethers, while beautiful glass doors allow the interior lights to shine through.
Year-Round Lounging
“When you live in New England, and you’re outdoors all the time, I don’t think people worry about cool weather because they’re pretty hardy,” explains Linda. “I think this is a patio that will get a lot of use.”
Background Furniture
“When people are outside, the beautiful teak and the cushions become the background for people and their dressed up clothes and their food and wine,” says Linda. “I like that kind of approach to outside, because you’re also looking at landscaping and the sky. The furniture is beautiful and durable, and it works in this area of the world. You want it to always look good and really be comfortable.”
Love the Lawn
A large lawn just off the patio is a great place for kids to play freely, still within sight of mom and dad.
Showered in Luxury
An outdoor shower on one side of the patio is a luxurious addition to the Cape Cod home. “This is a very physically active island, and there are lots of people out,” explains Linda. “This outdoor shower is great not only for the beach but just to be outside.”
Perfect Patio Space
Whatever the season, this amazing back patio is sure to get a lot of use, whether for entertaining guests or providing the perfect alone space to relax and take in the sights and sounds that the beautiful Martha’s Vineyard has to offer.
