Offbeat, Opulent Whimsigoth Decor Is the Softer Side of Scary

The 2020s have been wickedly delightful, design-wise, for those of us who consider spooky season a state of being rather than the too-short weeks preceding Halloween. Moss-is-more goblincore skittered into the spotlight and foregrounded all things earthy and eerie; dark academia enthusiasts asked, “What if every library and all boarding schools are haunted?” These aesthetics make morbid delights part of everyday life — 12-foot Home Depot skeletons we can invite inside, if you will. (Those skeletons are now springtime sellouts, as demonstrated at a ‘Halfway to Halloween’ event held in April.)

The latest subgenre of scary-good style is an especially playful one. Trendcasters and ridiculous-portmanteau-coiners would have you know that whimsigoth — with graphic black-and-white patterns, off-kilter geometry, a cavalcade of critters and endless delight in all things nocturnal and celestial — is a treat you can experience all year long. It’s so livable, in fact, that you might already recognize its elements in your space. Follow along as we celebrate the lighter side of darkness.

It should go without saying that whimsigoth finds its purest expression through filmmaker Tim Burton, whose instantly recognizable aesthetic — this feature's opening image was a display of his work, of course — has pioneered pop fantasy for more than 40 years. Movie audiences got a taste of what was to come in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), when Large Marge the truck driver became something decidedly more supernatural and scared the pants off of every Gen X kid. When Beetlejuice (1988) hit the scene three years later, it mainstreamed comedy-horror and launched a look that’s been box-office catnip ever since. The World of Tim Burton, a traveling exhibition of his art and design, has been on the road for more than a decade.

The most straightforward way to rep Burton's style is, of course, to add a copy of The World of Tim Burton, a catalog for the exhibition and a deep dive into his artistry, to your coffee table. Round out your stack with books from whimsigothic forefathers Edward Gorey and Charles Addams, and you're ghoulishly golden.

In Burton’s surreal scenes, creatures can be statuesque and statues (and buildings and furnishings) can wriggle to life. That anything-is-possible drama translates to interiors in irregular, organic-looking pieces that ooze character (and appear to be oozing as a general proposition). Does your lamp look a bit like a deep-sea denizen (or one of these Burton beasties)? That’s whimsigoth, darling.

Fancy a whimsigoth-inflected powder room? Biomorphic and brutalist beauties like the vanity mirror in this blood-red bathroom can spike your space with a bit of natural texture and make rounded shapes feel sweet and sinister all at once. Evoking fangs, horns and thorns, these accessories add opulence that don't feel too precious. To introduce them to your home, look for vessels, accessories and light fixtures with spiny silhouettes. And speaking of this blood-red bathroom...

Brooding maroons and antique bricks are well and good, but a Grand Guignol stage-blood red like this one is just the ticket for a high-contrast whimsigoth design moment. Consider how the tone on the wall and molding functions as a theater curtain for the high-concept, literally scorched Maarten Baas Smoke Dining Chair before it. Tim Burton would be proud.

In this midcentury modern space, candy-apple red industrial pendants and upholstery lend an almost cartoonish plasticity to a dining room. Sunnier accessories like these gain a bit of an edge in otherwise-desaturated spaces. We’re especially fond of how they pop against the oversized black-and-white photo strip mounted on the wall behind them. Have we mentioned how effective off-kilter photography can be in rooms like these? Keep your eyes peeled for old albums at flea markets and celebrate the eccentricities you find therein.

Horror aficionado and creepy culinarian Nikk Alcaraz serves up decidedly whimsigoth delights by setting his table with ectoplasm-adjacent jadeite, then layering in doilies, black-red cherries, "ladybug" caprese bites and iridescent "beetle" truffles. His Peculiar Baking hits bookstores on October 29, 2024 — just in time for Halloween — and in the interim, his handmade-craft-filled Los Angeles apartment is sure to inspire a creepy craft or two.

If a softer memento mori is more in keeping with your space, it's hard to go wrong with Andy Warhol's Skull (1976), seen here at Pittsburgh's magnificent Andy Warhol Museum. The artist's pop sensibility and sometimes-pastel palette play beautifully with other elements of whimsigoth style. Want to layer in even more color? Try a tiled version of the lithograph.

Create a space that’s funky and not too forbidding by pairing an ultra-dark wall and trim color, as in this Brooklyn townhome’s high-concept hallway, with blobby fixtures like these. Look for asymmetrical pieces, then cluster them together to emphasize their organic look.

For a high-impact, ceiling-mounted installation, consider the spooky beauty of this Rosie Li chandelier, which pairs striated and oil-rubbed ginkgo leaves with oversized, frosted candle bulbs (and illuminates the spectacular, swirling hallway ceiling above it just so). Look for irregular petals, canted branches and wandering fronds in warm metals to plant a bit of character in your space.

Speaking of horticulture, note that trading up from ho-hum hardware to funky resin pieces like this can take your case goods to a very dark place in no time. If you prefer dandelions, dried flowers or curling ferns, we're pleased to report that there are knobs for all of those, too.

Could this magnificent black-and-white macramé by artist Emma Boomkamp be the interior-design world’s unintentional answer to Beetlejuice’s iconic sandworms? Sourcing a staircase like this one is beyond most of us, but accessorizing with high-contrast fiber art is eminently doable and decidedly whimsigoth. The globular, monochromatic rug at the foot of the stairs doubles down on the concept beautifully.

The larger-than-life look of the Deetz house in Beetlejuice — re-created here as a musical 20 years after its film premiere — owes its impact to Tim Burton’s fascination with German Expressionism, a now century-old film movement epitomized in gorgeous, monochromatic films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu and Metropolis. Distorted shadows, forbidding silhouettes and off-kilter architecture came together to create dreamlike sets and images that Burton reinterprets and updates in his own art. What’s that got to do with area rugs and canopy beds, you ask? Whimsigoth often eschews right angles and delights in treating geometry like taffy, tweaking high-contrast patterns like stripes and checks to make them feel just a bit off.

One of the quickest ways to tweak straight lines and crisp patterns? Translate them to textiles. This ultra-graphic throw blanket might be the coziest shortcut to whimsigoth vibes, and it is definitely a fine way to make your cat look like a hairy little chess piece.

The offset black-and-white stripes on this through-the-looking-glass, wallpapered ceiling give the stylish room below it a gravity-defying, "Is-that-the-ceiling-or-the-floor?" feel — and that absurdity is quintessentially whimsigoth.

A whimsigoth weight rack? Friends, anything is possible when you embrace this aesthetic. Designer Tiffany Brooks repped the look here in the HGTV Smart Home 2016, where she commissioned North Carolina muralist Scott Nurkin to transform the exercise room. If you're feeling frisky, this effect is a potentially doable DIY — and if you prefer to minimize mayhem, you can approximate the effect with wallpaper.

Whimsigoth also borrows drama from art deco, Hollywood Regency and even midcentury modern designers, particularly with the exotic and sculptural wildlife they recreated in metal. The spiraling ibex horns on this magnificent dining table — a nod to Alain Chervet’s iconic ‘70s design — are glamorous and a bit spooky all at once. (The walls’ fantastically deep color amplifies that effect.)

Antique dealer Gladys Tay’s maximalist Minnesota home demonstrates the fearsome, fabulous effect of properly weird seating. Sure, her skull sculpture (with a hat, and why not?) is wonderfully whimsigoth — but the heavy hitter here is her family room’s Verner Panton Phantom chair, a squiggle that can be flipped around and repurposed as a two-seater, a lounge, a bench or a side table. Non-cartoonish furniture, please try harder.

This powder room riffs on whimsigoth’s emphasis on rich tones and eccentric angles through a deep blue, crane-spangled wallpaper and a nailhead-studded mirror with funky facets. Black-and-white subway tiles arranged in a basketweave pattern, in turn, add a punch of whimsigoth’s characteristic high-contrast monochrome.

Feature creatures get in on even more monochromatic action with an accent-wall paper that celebrates uncuddly critters; it’s the whimsigoth way. In this principal bedroom, Timorous Beasties’ iconic iguana pattern demonstrates that big old lizards can be every bit as elegant and atmospheric as, say, William Morris’s birds and berries.

This smaller-scale, stylized cryptozoology pattern, in turn, looks traditional at a distance and gets weirder in close focus. That made-you-look, wily charisma is what this aesthetic is all about.

Georgian ladies cavort with creepy-crawlies in this 129-year-old home’s playful powder room. Its wallpaper salutes Mary Ward, a 19th-century microscopy pioneer with a lifelong love of collecting bugs, and gives the space a cabinet-of-curiosities je ne sais quoi. Its quartet of mirrors amplifies the effect both literally and figuratively. To re-create the look, keep your eyes peeled for thrifted and flea-market pieces you can tie together with a few coats of spray paint.

If you prefer nocturnal creatures on the wing, give your space a bit of entomological oomph with a cruelty-free cabinet of curiosities like this tubside art. Its crisp symmetry and delicate curves are both wholeheartedly whimsigoth and adaptable to other decor schemes, should you decide to take your room in another direction someday. Soften black-and-white graphics like this — and the handsome-but-not-exactly-warm-and-fuzzy stone that frames it — with a textural faux-sheepskin rug like the one at the foot of this tub.

To put a three-dimensional spin on that look, reach for a vintage-inspired zoological fixture like this wall-mounted luna moth. With art deco-inflected detailing and an opulent metallic finish, it's an elegant nod to classic fantasy.

To get a sense of how vivid colors factor into this aesthetic, consider how Krane Home’s spectacular Tiger & Magpie wallpaper sets the stage for major drama in this moody-yet-welcoming foyer. The lush jade trim that carries up the staircase lends it contemporary charisma. The autumnal leaves cascading from the desk beside the staircase are both easy to forage and an instant punch of semi-spookiness.

The matte black walls in this 150-year-old Texas mansion’s sitting room let its electric-yellow vase, funky framed pieces and, yes, disembodied hands and rolling paper take center stage. True story: If you look closely enough in old mansions’ fine-print ownership conditions, there’s almost always a line about how you’ve got to have haphazard hands coming out of the wall.
