Chinese Hibiscus

Evergreen shrub valued for its exotic, four- to six-inch flowers and glossy, dark green foliage. In colder climates, it is grown as an annual and can be taken indoors for the winter. Bloom colors are white, pink, red, orange and yellow. Single-flowering, double-flowering, and bicolor types available; blooms last for one or two days. Flowers in summer. Variegated leaf forms also available. Plant size ranges from six to twelve feet tall and about as wide. Plants will be smaller if planted in a container.

How to use it: In masses, as a specimen or in containers. Use in a sunny, mixed perennial border or as a screen or hedge.

Culture: Prefers a moist, well-drained soil. Plant in full sun. Provide adequate moisture and fertilizer throughout the warm months. Bud drop may occur with too little or too much water or overfertilization. Sensitive to drought and cold. Benefits by pruning in spring to encourage flowering and branching. Primarily propagated through cuttings. May have some problems with aphids.

Special notes: A popular landscape shrub used in warmer climates. Does not like to be exposed to cold temperatures. Attracts wildlife, including birds (hummingbirds) and butterflies.
