15 Basic Items, 5 Easy Room Refreshes

Gather up your unused books, baskets, glassware, and more, and put them to use throughout your home with these budget-friendly decorating ideas.

Photo + Books + Hamper

= Entryway

Every home deserves a smile-inducing setup near the front door. Turn a photo into poster-size art (framebridge.com can do it for you), then stack books on and under a bench. The finishing touch: a stylish fabric hamper filled with a potted fiddle-leaf fig tree.

Basket + Scarf + Mugs

= Kitchen Sink Area

Have an electrician wire a hanging light socket, then slip a basket over it as a shade. For café curtains, cut and hem a colorful scarf, then hang the pieces from clip-on rings and tension rods. Finally, pot fragrant herbs in a set of mugs to keep on the counter.

Bookcase + Lamp + Glasses

= Dining Room Bar

Turn a bookish storage piece into a fun hub for entertaining. We painted the back panel inside our bookcase Great Green by Sherwin-Williams, then topped it with a lamp. Wine glasses and tumblers are stashed in the cubbies below.

Calendar + Pitchers + Tray

= Living Room Wall

Who says a calendar’s life span is only a year? Tear out its pretty pictures and frame them – inexpensive art! White ceramic pitchers do double-duty as sweet vases when displayed on a sleek tray.

Tablecloth + Mirror + Stepladder

= Bedroom

Transform your headboard in no time by draping an eye-catching (clean!) tablecloth over it. Hang a round mirror next to your bed to catch the morning sunshine. Then swap out your standard nightstand for a stepladder that has a bright pop of color. We painted the risers and top of ours Surfer by Sherwin-Williams.
