Alila Ventana Resort in Big Sur, California

There's only one road to Big Sur — Highway 1 — and some campsites along the way don't have electricity or plumbing, but Alila Ventana Big Sur, near Monterey, does. This coastal resort offers safari-style, canvas tents and views of a 20-acre canyon. The tents have custom-designed mattresses, premium linens, electric lamps, power outlets and deck sinks with instant hot and cold potable water. Revel in the natural beauty, gather around a wood-burning fire pit, roll up your tent's window coverings for fresh air (mesh linings keep the bugs out) and take your meals at picnic tables. Glampers share a bathhouse with showers and toilets. You'd have to book the resort's lodgings, not a tent, to use its pools, fitness studios and dining facilities, but glampers can stay busy watching incredible wildlife or going mountain biking, kayaking and windsurfing, among other activities. Bring up to two dogs for an extra $75 per stay, and your glamping pup will get a bed, water bowl and treats. Ventana won a 2022 Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Award as one of the top 12 resorts in Northern California.

Huttopia Adirondacks in Lake Luzerne, New York

Huttopia Adirondacks sits on 300 acres of woodlands in the Lake George region and is about one hour from Albany. It's a great glamping location for nature lovers, but you won't miss "civilization," because it's a short drive to the shops, beaches, restaurants and other attractions in Lake George Village. From their origin in the French Alps, Huttopia camps now include 65 sites in North America, Europe and China. Their tents go beyond sleeping bags and flickering flashlights — you’ll find cozy beds and electricity — but they’re not meant to be so elegant that you’ll stay in and miss the great outdoors. The tents have decks, firepits and picnic tables, and some have kitchens or kitchenettes and private bathrooms. Huttopia calls itself a French ready-to-camp experience (because tents are set up for you) and there's an on-site bistro (think crepes and espresso). Splash with the kids in the heated swimming pool, let them hit the playground or ride bikes. Check the website for information about on-site activities and entertainment.
