David Bromstad Looks for His Own Perfect Home in ‘My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Dream Home’

He plans to keep it in the family forever.

Ever since My Lottery Dream Home first aired in 2015, HGTV viewers everywhere have swooned over host David Bromstad’s creative style. Along with ogling over his paint swatches, decor picks, and overall finessing of many, many spaces, fans have wondered when a glimpse into David’s dream home would finally hit the network. And, we’re thrilled to say: The time has come.

The much-anticipated HGTV network special, My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Dream Home, is officially set to debut on Friday, July 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Of course, the question is, why now? To find out, we sat down with David himself to learn more about his dream home search.

The Backstory

For years, David put his own home on the back burner in order to focus all his attention on a variety of HGTV projects. Four years ago, however, he decided it was finally time to start looking for his own Orlando-based dream home.

“I had decided that I was going to live [in Orlando] but I was going to do it correctly,” he tells HGTV. “I wasn’t going to rush into anything. I wasn’t going to do anything emotional—I think it was very logical. I was like, ‘Be responsible.’”

As a result, rather than jumping into the first home he toured in Orlando, David chose to “park his buns” in an apartment, which he described as cute and little, but nice nonetheless. “I was supposed to be there for less than a year and I was there for 3-1/2 years,” he admits.

But then, throughout the past year or so, David took notice of the market. In looking for his dream home, he found that the housing market was still good in Orlando — something that can’t be said for many other areas of the country thanks to the surge in hopeful homeowners as a result of COVID-19, forcing the market from being a buyer’s market to a seller’s market. That, paired with current interest rates that he says are great, solidified David’s decision: It was finally time to find and secure his dream home.

Perfect Timing

Like many people, David’s timing was partially influenced by the pandemic. “COVID had a lot to do with it because everyone was hunkering down in their beautiful homes and I was hunkering down with my roommate, who is my best friend, and it was too crowded,” he admits.

Of course, COVID-19 wasn’t the only driving factor in David’s search. “There are so many motivations behind it: Desperation, need, current interest rates, like, it just felt time,” he says. “But I wasn’t going to rush it. If I didn’t find it for another year, then I wouldn’t have found it for another year. I wanted the house to hit me over the head.”

David’s Dream Home

Over the past year or so, David toured home after home. “I had looked and looked and looked and looked, and I knew what I wanted but it would change literally every week,” he says. “I’d be like ‘Oh! Maybe I’ll do a fixer-upper. Oh! Maybe it’ll be move-in ready.’ But, when a house hits you, it hits you, and I found a house and it hit me—hit me hard.”

The house in question is a 5-bed, 4-bath Tudor style home located in sunny Orlando. And, while David wholeheartedly plans to decorate it to the nines, he doesn’t plan on any major renovations.

“When I looked at this grouping of homes, I really wanted something that was move-in ready; that I didn’t have to do a lot of work,” he says. “Of course, I’m going to put my spin on it. It could have been brand new and I’m still going to tear some things down or paint things or, you know, do something structural."

Due to the nature of David's job, he knew he didn't want to be living in a mega-renovation for too long. While he does plan to design the house in true David fashion, he remarks, "But nothing too major because the network said ‘You’re going to be really busy the next few years, so do you want to live in a house that needs to be completely gutted?' and I was like, ‘No, I don’t.’ So I was like, let’s just find something that’s already done and put my own spin on it and be done.”

And that’s exactly what he did. Will it be his forever dream home? The verdict is still out. But, for now, it’s exactly what he envisioned.

“It’s my dream right now,” he says. “It’s such a special and unique place, and every time people come in, the vibe here is so cool and chill. It’s a great entertainer’s home, and I love to entertain and I love to have people over, and the backyard is fantastic ... So, I’m just living for the moment.”

But, just because he views it as his current dream doesn’t mean that he thinks he’ll part ways with it.

“Will I ever sell this house? I don’t think so,” he says. “I think this is going to be a generational home. It’s really special and it’s in a really special neighborhood. In this neighborhood, houses basically go from generation to generation to generation to generation—no one sells their houses in this neighborhood.”

A Special Sneak Peek

What will likely shock fans most is that David’s dream home doesn’t currently look like his dream home. Structurally, sure. But design-wise, the Rock the Block star is currently living outside of his normal colorful palette.

“I just finished filming my Christmas episode, so I’m just living with a neutral palette right now because I don’t want to see anything extra,” he shares. “I’ve literally had like 80 Christmas trees up in my space.”

But don’t fret! David has every inclination to spruce up his space in his signature way.

“I will be adding loads of color, loads of wallpaper,” he says. “In my kitchen, even though it’s beautiful white on white on white—that’s not me. Like, it’s going full color. I’ll keep the white countertops and white backsplash, because it’s flawless; and I’ll paint the kitchen. Add a few little zhuzhey things to make it delicious.”

While those add-ons aren’t quite finalized in his home, David says that viewers will be able to see almost all of the rooms of his home on the special.

“You’ll see the entire house, absolutely,” he assures. “As far as design, no. That’s a whole 'nother show.”

And then he winked. Which only makes us that much more excited for not only the special but what’s down the pipeline for David and all us viewers at home.
