Freestanding kitchen islands come with a variety of options. Many of them include wheels, like a butcher's or utility cart. These islands come in a number of styles, including carts with wooden butcher block tops and ones made completely from stainless steel.

Other freestanding kitchen island options include stock cabinetry or buffet style designs. These islands typically stand on legs similar to a dresser and have minimal storage space, such as a set of drawers and open shelf storage for books or large appliances.

Pre-designed freestanding kitchen islands often incorporate helpful features, such as a rod for hanging towels or metal hooks to hang small pots. Of course, the most valuable aspect of a freestanding kitchen island is that it is not a permanent fixture in a kitchen and can be easily moved.

Repurposed options for a freestanding kitchen island include placing a kitchen-friendly surface on top of an old office desk or using an antique dresser to give a kitchen a vintage vibe.
