Heat-tolerant zoysia grass is a good option for homeowners with tough soil conditions.

Heat tolerant and able to grow under many soil conditions, the dense, soft coverage that zoysia grass provides has gained popularity in recent years among homeowners across much of the United States. Durable and drought-resistant, zoysia stands up well in high-heat conditions. It creates a dense, attractive turf that looks its best in the height of summer but soon fades to brown as fall hits. It is a good option for those dealing with challenging soil conditions or with areas where crabgrass is particularly invasive.

Climate

Does best in mixed to hot weather conditions. Zoysia thrives in Southern states and coastal regions.

Sun/Shade

Will tolerate partial shade in hotter regions, but in cooler areas, plenty of sunlight is necessary. Will not grow in heavy shade.

Water

Drought tolerant, but performs best with deep watering.

Pros:

  • Grows in most soils
  • Tolerant of extreme heat, salt and drought
  • Disease-resistant
  • Can tolerate partial shade
  • Thick growth inhibits crabgrass

Cons:

  • Turns brown in fall
  • Requires regular maintenance
  • Takes two years to establish
