30 Mini Makeovers in 30 Minutes or Less by HGTV

HGTV Magazine shares clever little ways to spruce things up superfast.

1. Trade in the inserts your throw pillows came with for down-filled ones that are an inch or two bigger—they’ll make them look extra plump.

2. Replace the jumble of pens on your desk with a matching set in a graphic cup, like this chevron one ($18, seejanework.com).

3. Spray-paint the inside of your mailbox a happy color. Be prepared to smile—even if you’re picking up bills!

4. Wrap a plain drum shade with three colors of yarn. Leave about three inches uncovered at the top for the white “stripe.” Hot-glue the yarn to the shade as you go.

5. Turn leftover ceramic or glass tiles into coasters by hot-gluing cork to the back of each one.

6. Cheer up a plain throw pillow. Attach a large pom-pom to each corner with a needle and thread or fabric glue. Look for pom-poms at etsy.com/shop/stephlovesben ($7 for a set of 4). Pom-poms make a pillow pop!

7. Paint wood crates, then screw colorful casters ($12 each, coolcasters.com) to the bottom corners to make movable storage bins.

8. Put your favorite candlestick on permanent display by turning it into a lamp base with a lamp kit (available at hardware stores).

9. Instead of letting flowers spill over the top of a vase, display them in a tall glass cylinder with the blooms not quite reaching the top.

10. Stitch together place mats you love to create a one-of-a-kind table runner.

11. Spray-paint plastic fruit with flat white paint to make mini pieces of art.

12. Give potted plants a lusher look by covering the soil with preserved moss (available at crafts stores).

13. Doodle on the glass of framed photos—think mustaches on faces—with a grease pencil. Find them at crafts and art supply stores. It’ll wipe right off with a paper towel.

14. Spray-paint just the hardware on a piece of wood furniture with an eye-catching color to update it.

15. Perk up an old bed frame by slipcovering the headboard. Ballarddesigns.com has great options, or have an upholsterer make one for you.

16. Change out a plain white pendant lamp cord for a colorful one ($25, colorcord.com). purple is so unexpected

17. Cover walls with maps—use vintage ones as wallpaper (apply with wallpaper paste) or try a giant decal (Jumbo World Map mural, $199, potterybarnkids.com).

18. Use a clip-on lamp, like this gold one ($59, landofnod.com), to brighten up a bookcase. Attach it to the top shelf and angle it to shine down. an easy way to highlight shelves

19. Get creative with tape that looks like an ornate frame (Copernicus curator tape, $10, urbanoutfitters.com). Put a print or photo on your wall, then use the tape around it. tape that looks like a fancy frame

20. Add interest to a bookcase by attaching a wide piece of ribbon along the front edge of each shelf using picture hanging strips, which won’t damage your furniture.

21. Make doing dishes a little more fun by splurging on a cool-looking drying rack (Arena self-draining dish rack, $45, josephjoseph.com).

22. DIY some pretty votive candleholders. Coat the outside of jelly jars with food coloring mixed with gloss Mod Podge and a little water.

23. Revamp a basic dresser so it looks like vintage campaign furniture. Screw flat brass corner braces (available at hardware stores) outside the corners of each drawer, then replace the center hardware with flat brass pulls (try vintagehardware.com).

24. Paint just the inside of your front door a sunny color. It’ll boost your mood every time you head outside.

25. Disguise a no-frills box spring by slipping a pretty fitted sheet over it. Much cheaper than a special box spring cover.

26. Glue magnets to the back of patterned clothespins like these from Fancy Pants Designs ($4 for a set of 8, getfancystudio.com). Stick them to your fridge to hold kids’ art or your grocery list.

27. Fit a piece of corkboard inside a frame and tack art to it. When you want to switch it up, just pin on something new.

28. Spruce up standard white tiles with specialty decals in pretty patterns (from $18 for a set of 6, 2jane.com).

29. Ditch your plastic toothbrush holder for a vintage juice glass with a cute design. Most are small enough to fit on the side of your sink.

30. Time for one last update? Remove the hands from a white clock, then paint them with spray enamel (available at crafts stores) or nail polish.
