Create the look of stained glass on an existing window with adhesive film and stick-on lead.

*Note: This project is demonstrated on a glass piece, but the idea is to tape a pattern on a clear window and work at eye level.

Materials and Tools:

window
rubbing alcohol
any pattern on paper
tape
stick-on lead strips
cutting tool
burnishing tool
self-adhesive, colored film (available at craft stores)

Steps:

  1. Clean the window with rubbing alcohol.

  2. Apply a pattern with tape to the outside of the window.

  • Using both hands, apply stick-on lead strips to the glass, outlining the pattern. Use one hand to press the lead to the glass as the other hand leads it in the direction of the pattern.

  • Use a cutting tool to cut each end of the lead on the glass, being careful not to scratch the glass.

  • Use a burnishing tool on the lead intersections to give the piece a welded-joint look. The edge of a hair comb works well, too.

  • Spritz the glass surface and a colored film sheet with regular tap water and apply the film to the surface opposite the lead.

  • Use a cutting tool to cut the film, hiding the cut along the lead lines.

  • Peel away the extra film. Allow to dry for an hour. Adding a second layer of lead on this side gives the impression of stained glass.
