About the Show

Every neighborhood has one — that local hero who makes life a little easier for everyone around him or her. Now is America's chance to celebrate neighborhood heroes in a BIG way. Each week, HGTV's cousins, Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, give one hero the surprise of a lifetime. First, we send him or her away for a weekend. Once they are gone, the cousins descend on the neighborhood with huge trucks and hulking teams of renovators to tackle a home overhaul customized exactly to the hero. Finally, the cousins and the neighborhood band together to reveal our hero's house, transformed inside and out.

A Soldier's Home Heals with Help as a Bold, Modern Facade Melds with Rustic Rooms Inside

Anthony and John team up with Ellen Degeneres to create a life-changing surprise for a family who have dedicated themselves to our country despite suffering personal setbacks. Military Veterans Alex and Heather Stephenson bought their home with the hopes of finally planting roots with their three young kids after years of constantly moving. But just after closing on the home, Heather suffered a dangerous auto accident that derailed their plans to address the house's many needs. With her amazing recovery complete, Ellen flies the family out for a sunny L.A. vacation while the Cousins corral local Veterans, town officials and citizens who are eager to help give the Stephensons the dream home they always wanted, complete with a modern exterior and rustic flourishes inside amid the repairs and renovations to their kitchen, living room and master suite.

A Budding Chef's Surprise

While eleven-year-old Johnny Volpe is away for three days on a beach trip, the Cousins go undercover and join together with the entire community who loves and appreciates him to give Johnny and his family a major renovation throughout their entire first floor including their living room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom. To accomplish all this in such a short timeframe, Anthony and John will rely on all hands on deck to give Johnny an amazing surprise which will not only restore the home's integrity but will become a place better suited for coordinating the family's many volunteer events raising money for cancer research and furthering Johnny's love of cooking.

Coach's Custom Quarters

Bob Keenan has no idea that as soon as he leaves for a three-day weekend away, volunteers from all areas of his life will join forces with the Cousins to create an amazing renovation for this incredibly deserving person who always does for others without ever asking for anything in return. In addition to some major curb appeal, they'll build a true wrestling gym to enable him to continue his work with kids, a massive deck to add to the sense of community he cherishes and an overhaul to his living room finally give him a great place to be able to relax with his family. It's a lot to pull off in only three days but with the help from Bob's whole neighborhood, Anthony and John will give him an emotionally-charged surprise he'll remember forever.

Veteran's Vintage Overhaul

The young Wendl family leaves their small, close-knit town in Iowa for a fun trip to L.A. that includes watching a live taping of ELLEN. But when Ellen and her special guests, the Cousins, pull them out of the studio audience and onstage, things start to sink in... Anthony and John have already begun an undercover overhaul of their home and recruited the entire town to help. The Wendl's house is seventy years old and while it's filled with flourishes of their personal, vintage style, it's needs a lot of work. Sam Wendl's military service overseas prevented him from having the chance to repair what the house sorely needs much less to create the home in their image. Friends, family and all the whole town pitch in to completely rebuild the exterior, remake entire first floor and give them a backyard to perfectly fit their lifestyle.

With Mike and his family at the beach for just three days, the Cousins go undercover with the help of his fellow public servants to renovate his huge basement and backyard, both blank canvases with great potential that Mike doesn't have the time or resources to develop. Furiously working to accomplish all this in order to give Mike an amazing surprise in such a short timeframe can only be accomplished by everyone pitching together alongside Anthony and John in the spirit of what Mike has always done for others as a volunteer firefighter, EMT and police officer.

Since buying the house a year ago, she's been wanting to create a bedroom and nursery in her unfinished, unlivable second floor. But after recently getting laid off from her teaching job, those dreams were put on hold. Now she'll get all that and much more.

Within a year, the whole basement flooded and the space became entirely unusable. Now this budding family of four needs all the space they can get. So the Cousins team up with Marianela's colleagues, patients, family and friends to surprise her with a modern cottage-style full basement overhaul including a family room with a handmade fireplace, custom open stairs and a stage for the kids to entertain guests.

At the top of the list of their own needs are a kitchen overhaul and something functional and fun for their blank canvas of a backyard. The Cousins recruit Lauren's students, co-workers, fellow EMS volunteers, family and friends to turn their home into a place to share with the community they love. The dated, broken-down kitchen gets a complete modern makeover and they remove the wall from the kitchen to the backyard replacing it with floor to ceiling accordion doors that lead to a new, Moroccan-themed deck complete with a romantic pergola, built-in tree boxes and a custom indoor/outdoor beverage cart.

Her condition has drained her and her husband's resources preventing them from fixing the serious issues that threaten their first home together. So the Cousins corral help from her co-workers, family and friends to surprise her with an entire first floor overhaul. They completely redo her outdated, dysfunctional kitchen with all new appliances, cabinets and floors, they turn her empty dining room into a refined, traditional space with a coffered ceiling and pocket doors and they transform her drab, dangerous patio into a safe and inviting entryway and spot for relaxation.

Mark Little risked his life fighting in the Iraq War and, although he lost his legs to an IED, he has never stopped living life to the fullest and relentlessly encouraging to do so. He and his wife bought the house Mark grew up in several years ago but, with Mark currently a full-time student who dedicates all his free time to inspiring other wounded vets by running marathons, giving speeches and raising funds, the couple lacks the means to make their home more functional for the needs of a person who spends all day on prosthetic legs. So the Cousins recruit Ellen DeGeneres to surprise the Littles with a life-changing home renovation including an indoor spa and hot tub to soothe his aches and pains, a bedroom/bathroom overhaul specifically designed to make his life easier and a living room rec area for entertaining his military buddies complete with a custom shuffleboard.
