The first step in installing a DIY kitchen countertop is to create a template. Measure your surface area using a tape measure, then use sheets of poster board or another similar material to create the template. You may have to tape the pieces together. This template can then be used to create your countertop.

Choosing your countertop material might be the toughest part because of the sheer number of options that are available, including laminate and Formica. Concrete, stainless steel and ceramic tiles are also fairly cost-efficient options that can be used when constructing a do-it-yourself countertop.

If you have a true artistic spirit, then you may want to consider a recycled glass countertop. For this countertop, you will apply the same concept that is used to make mosaics. Using broken glass and tile adhesive, you can create a limitless range of designs and patterns.

Regardless of the countertop surface you choose, keep in mind that heavier materials, like granite and Corian countertops, will most often require the help of professionals to install. You can, however, cut the cost by taking countertop measurements on your own.
