About

Before training as an architect, Alan worked as a carpenter, contractor and cabinet-maker, acquiring a lifelong appreciation for craftsmanship and the practical realities of construction. Alan went on to work as lead designer and partner at three Philadelphia firms before opening Metcalfe Architecture & Design in 2001.

He holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University, a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Tufts University and is a LEED AP and NCARB certified. Outside the practice, Alan is an adjunct professor and visiting critic at local architecture schools, serves on the boards of multiple non-profit community, arts and cultural organizations in and around his home in Mt. Airy, and spends as much time playing in Blues and R+B in bands as his wife will tolerate.
